This is what was told by the PalmOne representative in the treo chat earlier today:

"All shipments of the Treo 650 from PalmOne will commence on Friday, November 12, 2004."
  2. #2
Yeah right....I'll believe it when I see it at my door.........

PalmOne rep went on to say:

"The Treo 650 will be available in limited supply until January 2005."

Makes me wonder how many phones are going to be released before the new year.

    But, another good sign:

"Orders placed before November 28, 2004 from PalmOne, will be automatically upgraded to next day air shipping."

I still say the best chance is to swoop into a Sprint or Best Buy store the day they become available and get one that way. Especially if you live in an area with a number of stores.

Nov 09 10:53:13 <PalmOne> The first shipment of Treo 650 devices will occur on Friday, November 12, 2005. Retailers will then decide on dates of sale per individual retailer upon receiving shipment.

I guess we'll have to deal with training delays, etc.... joy.

The two sentences are not connected.

PalmOne does not have a problem with saying:

    == A. B.

and letting you mistakenly connect the two and assume A implies B or A is related to B.

    (1) "The first shipment will occur Nov 12" STOP

    (2) "Retailers will sell upon receiving shipment" STOP

    Capiche?

Since they were stated together, that is how I left them.

Secondly, one would logically assume that retailers will sell the 650's as soon as possible -- after employee training, etc.

From the first post in this thread:

I completely stand by my interpretation of PalmOne's purposeful obfuscation.

I intend to go straight to a best buy as well. Sprint store is on the same road heading to best buy where I live.

For one of other guys comments on training. From what I have seen, there is no training at Best Buy. It is rare that the sales rep actually knows anything about these new, high end phones. Are you speaking of reps at service provider stores?

There's only one Best Buy around here (and one sixty miles away) but there are about half a dozen corporate Sprint stores. Chances of at least one of those places having at least one left by the time I get there should be pretty good I suspect that if you really want one, you can get one the day they become available.

Seldom, you probably have not taken the time to, or gone through the logs of the chat.

The P1 rep stated the ship date several times... only one of which was in the thread you are interpreting.

My post, which is VERBATIM from the chat transcript, is what you chose to comment on. A different statement entirely, however, both are consistent... one just needlessly adds the perogative of the retailer.

I hardly think P1 is trying to obfuscate the fact they are shipping on Nov. 12 - since BOTH comments state that. It seems rather CLEAR to me.

Furthermore, I would think less of the comment if the P1 rep tried to predict a date when retailers would actually SELL the 650... it is better he left that alone.

I actually thought the same thing, but when visiting a BB store two days ago, I talked to a 3rd party rep about the 650.

It was not immediately clear whether she was working w/ the BB cell cronies or training them or whatever... but she mentioned that they 'had not even received 650's to train on' and that they had received the PPC6601's already.

Given that, she thought it would be a while before they had the 650's -- since they typically get them ahead of release for training purposes.

    --------
Now given all we know... it seems she was wrong... but that was the basis for my original comment.

    Cheers!!

BB sells phones under provider contracts... so I would think your only chance of an unlocked 650 from BB would be through Cingular... and that probably will not be until Jan '05.

They will sell you a phone outright, but every provider locks their phones except for Cingular.
