    1. Stay with T-mobile
    - 650 would be unlocked
    - pay more for unlocked version
    - Edge not available now
    - gprs roaming is at least available (though outragously priced!)

    2. Switch to Cingular
    - Edge is available now
    - 650 would be locked to Cingular
    - have to get a new contract
    - save money with a 2 year contract

Are there any other considerations? What would you do?
    thanks!

I was in the same boat. Decided for T-mo as cingular coverage is spotty in my work place.

*EDIT* Of course that is what was heard. I heard that the salesman are trying to push the $40 data plan, but it is really not needed.
    Same here !
I am thinking getting an unlocked 650, keeping my actual carrier (T-Mobile - out of contract) and maybe later get a free phone on Amazon with Cingular (with a big rebate making my first investment affordable) and then switch the SIM to the 650.
If I don't like the service on Cingular, I can always break the contract (30 days) and I will still have a 650 unlocked and stay with T-Mobile avoiding in the same time an extension of contract.
My main concern is definitely data (pricing and speed) with Cingular.
I can't wait to read reviews on this forum

Seems like a good plan, no ?

    Found this on Buy.com:
    . Treo 650 Cingular: http://www.buy.com/retail/toc_featur...ingularTreo650
    . Treo 650 T-Mobile: http://www.buy.com/retail/toc_featur...tmobileTreo650

Seems that the T-Mobile version is a mix of PalmOS and PocketPC ;-)

Hi dear members. I do not want to read 87 pages... a quick question is:
When can I get an UNLOCKED GSM Treoo 650? Thanks.

    Supposedly Cingular on Wednesday.

    All,

I do not want to make you so disappointed. But when I looked at the buy.com weblink as you guys mentioned about I read lots a misleading and error message.

The object of that weblink is 'treo650'
    1. the ETD is early 2006???
    2. the description is then talking about an 'MDA'?
    3. Integrated with WIFI and slinding keyboad?
    4. Windows Mobile 2003 for PocketPC operation??

All proof shows they are actually mentioned about the Dopod 700 (made by HTC, and which already been announced), absolutely not the Treo 650.

What an 'Error website' like that way.

Cingular Unlocked? And what's about the wifi story? Built-in wifi or something else?

It is the 11th hour and I am wanning. Cingular has a plan for a free SE t637. My primary need is BT, rest of Treo functions are just to geek me out...Let's face it I'm always 10 feet away from a computer unless I don't want to be. If I like it I may just keep it. :-(

Anyway, I thought this might help those skeptics about mediaworks not being available without first having a different phone from Cingular. NOTE I am not one of those.

For the next 2 days you can get a free t637 from cingular, they have a 30 trial period. You can then take it back and trade it for a 650! That way you aren't stuck with this phone laying around.

The unlocked version will be available during the release time frame of the Cingular release.

And you believe that without reservation? Or do you mean "should be"?

I believe without reservation what I was told by PalmOne at CES. I am not going on a feeling. Are you speculating that something has changed?

    100thMonkey, (or any knowledgable person)

Is VoIP possible on a Tro 650?

Is VoIP legal on a Treo 650?
  17. #1737
No, I just wonder exactly what "release time frame" means. It sounds like it can encompass quite a large chunk of time. I've also learned never to make a statement that is so "definite" when I have no direct control over the outcome and of which there are so many external controlling factors.

    Mumbo Jumbo..... .

I did not want to be more direct. Yes, that terminology is somewhat ambiguous and side-steps saying PalmOne and Cingular would have concurrent releases of a branded and unbranded T650. I was attempting to avoid "technicalities" because at CES, PalmOne told me between 1-2 month. But PalmOne was speaking for PalmOne and not Cingular. They were estimating their own release time in conjunction with Cingular's release. In other words, they were taking their cues from Cingular. However, I will say again I believe without reservation what I was told by PalmOne at CES that the PalmOne and Cingular versions of the T650 would be released at the same time.

If the GSM one is unlocked, will you buy it immediately as soon as it's available?

I don't think there is any legal issue and it is just a matter of a developer choosing to create a VoIP client. At CES it was reported that the BenQ P50 actually had a Sykpe installed. Also, the bandwidth available through Sprint or perhaps even EDGE would be sufficient to support VoIP (although it might be choppy due to lag and such.).
