Couldn't resist went to the local Cingular store (used to be AT&T). They make the Sprint store look like quantum physicists. Genius said not until March. I asked why and he said that's his guess. Geesh...

lemongrass...I'm trying to make the same decision! Leaning towards staying with TMo because I'm grandfathered into the TZones @ $2.99...and I believe that will get me all the internet I will need (I don't use that much data)...

I guess it all depends on when an unlocked GSM is available from P1 ???

Got my new 64K SIM card...now I just need a 650 for it! Went to the Cingular store on the way home today and had them switch out my SIM. While there, I showed 3 of the sales reps all the cool things this phone can do (the 600). One of the guys was saying that he was going to buy a 600 since they had gone down. I told him he could buy mine for $100 if he could find me a 650 ASAP. He said its on their pricelist. He called a B2B buddy and that guy, of course, wasn't sure. I told them the rumor was next week and they said that could be true since its on their pricelist. They said it might be in the warehouse in Memphis. However, this sales rep was foaming at the mouth for my 600. I think he will try to find me a 650 just so he can get a great deal on a 600. Works for me....I just want my new phone!!!!

    Summary:
Sales reps still know nothing, but I have one trying to find me a GSM650 so he can get a cheap 600!

Anyone using PDANet on Cingular, please send me your network settings. When I try to use PDANet GPRS drops and I get a PDANet error message. Cingular network settings point to "Cingular Express" and a wap server. I am on a $40- unlimited data plan.

I don't think you will find GPRS roaming cheaper anywhere else. It's like that even between different carriers in Europe last I looked. One advantage is that you can get data for $20 a month rather than have to play tricks with Cingular who wants you to spend $40 or $80 depending on who you talk to.

    1. Stay with T-mobile
    - 650 would be unlocked
    - pay more for unlocked version
    - Edge not available now
    - gprs roaming is at least available (though outragously priced!)

    2. Switch to Cingular
    - Edge is available now
    - 650 would be locked to Cingular
    - have to get a new contract
    - save money with a 2 year contract

Are there any other considerations? What would you do?
    thanks!

Wow, in the past 10 hours 4 pages of posts were made! Took me forever to catch up from just this morning! Ha ha!

Why are you paying $40? I would call them back and switch to the $20 unlimited. There shouldn't be a difference in your service or speed.

I'm leaning towards staying with T-Mobile too. (though I'm on the 19.99 data plan), I'm assuming the P1 will be out the same time... appears tmo is going to roll out Edge, though the timing is unknown. I also like that T-mobile doesn't block vpn in any way.

I can testify that most (many?) in-store sales and service people know nothing. Furthermore, if you go to ANY phone store (Verizon, Sprint, Cingular, T-Mobile, Nextel AT&T, etc.) looking for a super-deal, you might as well take your own shaft with you and hand it to them because no one can beat online dealers in prices.

In-store wireless shopping and service is not for the tech savvy. It works fine if you tend to believe anything the kids that work at the store tell you.

Sure thats another carrier's motto, but its funny in this context...at least to me.

I'm in the exact same situation...debating whether or not to stay with T-Mobile or switch to Cingular. My contract expires in Oct. '05...so, I think I'm going to buy the unbranded GSM version and stick with T-Mobile until my contract expires - then, I'll reassess Cingular. Plus, whatever deal I get from my Cingular Corporate Rep probably won't negate the fee to get out of my contract with T-Mobile; which I think is $150 or $175....damn, now I really wish I never upgraded to the BB 7100t and agreed to the 1 year contract...doh!

Thanks for the offer. It's very nice. I'm going to wait to see what happens next week, but I did want thank you.

this is not about the money. Ir is about the function. I only mentioned the money to take it off the table. If you do not know the settings, please be silent.

I'm just trying to help you. I didn't mean to offend you. I just hate to see people spending more money than they should. Helping each other is what this forum is about; even if its getting an answer you didn't ask for. Please be courteous to those lending a hand; and if it doesn't help you, then please be silent.

You are missing the point. IT IS NOT ABOUT THE MONEY. I do not need help with the economics. I need help with the settings. If it does not work, it does not maike any difference whether it does not work for $20 or $80. In either case I must go back to T-Mobile.

I don't want to argue anymore, but you are missing my point. Just because someone tries to help you, but doesn't give the info you want, there is no reason to tell that person to "be silent". Just ignore it and wait for your answers. That way the person (being me in this instance) doesn't know, and everyone is happy.

Thinking back, we should have had this discussion privately. I don't mean to try to make anyone look bad.

Oh geez... I would be delighted to if no one objects. What an honor you have bestowed upon me TechJunkie. I am looking forward to constructive, resourceful, and supportive dialogue. We have a lot of great members.

Now go spread the seed of GSM...

I suppose you if you can call PalmOne for a GSM Treo 600 then you can call them for a 650. However, if that does not work. I am sure you and I thread members can do something creative to cause you to the the first person in Canada with a GSM Treo 650.

I could probably order it from another source like Expansys but then I worry about running into warrenty troubles with P1 if something is broken.

I have T-Mobile as well and my contract has been up for a while. I was hoping to procure an unlocked T650 and just pop my sim card in. I have heard that Cingular will MAKE you take the expensive data plan with a T650, or least that is what the manager told me at a Cingular store around here. Some people on these boards have suggested buying a cheap phone from Cingular with the cheaper data plan, and then switching the cards so they don't know you're going to jack them up with lots of data usage.

A secondary consideration would be service. I get great reception here with T-Mobile, but I'm not too sure about Cingular's reception. I'm thinking Cingular's minutes & data will be more expensive overall. Still, if the data IS much faster, it may be worth it. I think I'm going to start asking people if they like their Cingular service. I didn't find too many happy Sprint customers in my area, thus my frequent stops here.

    Hope that helped

Well if it comes out next week, I plan on getting the T650 and the 450 roll over minutes without a data plan. Then when I get my #, I will create an account with cingular and add the media works package. Now I hope that would work.

*EDIT* Of course that is what was heard. I heard that the salesman are trying to push the $40 data plan, but it is really not needed.
