I didn't believe it at first, but I have noticed a very considerable difference in my hometown (maybe a coincidence of new towers going up or something). Again, it is not the 'physical' component of the SIM that caused this. It was the programming. It is, however, a physical limitation with the treo 650: it won't accept old SIM cards, like the 600. It will only use SIM cards that operate on a lower voltage. Says so in the manual of the 650 offered at the FCC site. That is why I posted; to get those with old SIM cards to get new ones (Cingular updates theirs for free) so that you can take advantage of your 650 right after the first charge! Enjoy!
I think you are simply on a different home network than before. Maybe you are on the old ATTWS network and before you were on the original Cingualr network? The SIM can not override the GSM standard and that is what it sounds like your informant has told you this new SIM can do.

OI don't know about the backwards compatibility of phones that come with the 64K SIMs. I know a family member got a new Cingular phone at Christmas and when I put my old 32K SIM in his phone it worked right away (his had the new 64K SIM). I suppose the Cingular version could have some sort of software lock to only work with a 64K SIM, but I don't believe the other carriers have 64K SIMs anyway, so don't think it would help PalmOne to offer them to only work with that kind of SIM.

Edit: Well it does not look like Cingular is the only carrier with 64K SIMS, I am not sure what other US carriers are using them though. I can tell you on Cingular it is necessary for what is being called ENS (Enhanced Network Selection) - this is simply something they are using until the two networks (ATTWS and Cingular) can be merged into one network. It will not allow your phone to do anything it couldn't do under the GSM standard before.

MacWorld was very cool. The new mini-Mac is amazing. I just got to have one. So tiny and it's a complete computer wiith Firewire, USB, video, DVD, etc. The mini-Mac is not much bigger than a Treo 650. About 2 1/2 times the size. MacUser turned me on to a product called MissingSync. Very cool for syncing a Palm on Mac or PC. Unfortunately, PalmOne is not present at this show.

I am going back for a couple of hours tomorrow and look at things more in depth. I'll let you know what I find.

That's ridiculous. That should be 12 2005. Even P1 could not be that late.

If you follow the link you'll see that that date doesnt get mentioned, off course he is pulling your leg, 2012 is 7 years away, by that time technology will have advanced way past the 650 level..

The mini-Mac is a little smaller than my first 10MB hard drive. It cost me $3K at the IBM employee price.

"Reps at other corporate stores in my area (chicago) are still quoting 1/20 as a target release date as of yesterday."

I picked this little Mac up and thought how I could get one in my office where we run Windows entirely. It would be such space saver. Futhermoremore, you dony have to be as attentive as you might be w/ a laptop.

Now to answer you questions. A)The software is upgraded to version 4.0. However, version 4.02 is being beta tested for release soon with MacOS 10.4 code named Tiger. B]) It works with the Treo 650. They were demostrating it with a 650 at the booth. C) Yes, there is a developer's kit for it, which has already gone out. The rep said check their website. Also, you can download a trial (my memories going bad here) developers kit for 15 days. Great product! The guy I spoke to said he used to work for PalmOne and that he was the former Product Manager of the HotSync development department. He said that that experience helped him develop MissingSync. I like the idea of being able to sync WIFI from 20 miles away at a Starbucks.
I'm glad it worked out for you. Congrats on the discounted price. Yeah, I read nothing but great reviews of their software. I was going to buy it now just to get familiar with it, but I wanted to know if it was going to have an update for Tiger. Thanks again for going to their booth for me. I wish I could actually get out to the west coast for a MacWorld someday.

I still wish there were an iPhone/Newton That would be cool...

You got that right! Specimen38 thanks for the report. The mini-mac does look cool.

As for the phonescoop post, I didn't look before but after Toolkit asked if anyone had read the reply posts I went back and noticed that not only is there a guy saying he's still being quoted the 20th, there are 2 other guys claiming they already have GSM 650's. One of the guys says he was told his area is a test market.
Oh, so they have internet on computers now!

I would try calling some of those numbers because I promised myself that I would get MORE obessive and frantic and frenzied about the 650, but I'm Canada and on top the long distance I just don't see Cingular taking me seriously when I live in another country.
Oh, so they have internet on computers now!

Well I'll be the obsessive person here...

I called and...... NO BODY has it or has any idea about it....

P.S. the Furniture Mart does have a Cingular Rep. in it.. like the little booths for Verizon in Wal-Mart.
