I called the Sprint support number to ask about the release of the Treo 650. Sprint phone tech said he had just recieved an email that day reading " the Treo 650 will be available in Sprint retail stores, in the major metro areas(LA, SF, NYC, etc...), November 1st.

They must be smokin crack. No way would I pay that much with a contract.

The rep who gave that information must have been "smokin crack".

I would not be surprised at all for the 650 to debut at $600 with a contract and no rebates. This will be another case of a company making a huge margin on the early adopters and then lowering the price when sales start to fall to get the regular, less cha-chinged geeks in. We've all heard the rumors of the Mpx debuting at $1000 (for that kind of money it better do more than retrieve my email and keep my contacts and appointments), and DirecTV released that HD DVR box almost a year ago at $1000 and the retail price hasn't come down $1 yet. I know that neither of those cost a grand to manufacture. This isn't unusual to try to bleed the cutting edge buyers dry and then discount the product later. Why wouldn't Sprint bring it out at $600? They know people will pay it. A good portion of the people in this forum will pay it.

I thought Sprint had already announced that their price would be $599. It was in the official press release. Now the question is - is this with our without a new contract. Their announced prices have always been in the past without a new contract and you get rebates for a new contract or if you've had your old phone for 18 months.

I don't see anywhere where it says "new" service plan. It just says the phone has to be used with a compatible service plan.

I didn't say anything about a "new" service plan. It does however say "when purchased with service plan".

That Amazon link cracks me up. It says "Yes, this product is available," but naturally when you click on the "select this phone" link, and then page to the very end of the page it takes you to, you see that it "usually ships in 4 to 6 weeks." Available, my a#$!!!

I appreciate your confidence on best buy but how on earth do you confirm? I called and mentioned hearing it in a news group and they said the info was basically of confidential nature (this is a matter of national defense no doubt). ALthough one fella on a news group posted the actual in store data sheet that says 14 Nov.
    Ideas?

The only rebate Sprint will offer in the beginning will the $150 18 month upgrade offer. The $599 price will be in conjunction with a new contract.

As has been discussed in another thread, try to find someone who has an eligible $150 discount and get him/her to buy the phone for you and then transfer your old number to the new ESN. My wife still has the same crappy phone she got when we signed up with Sprint (and isn't interested in either my old 600 or a new 650), so she will be using her trade-up credit towards my new 650.

in fairness to amazon.com, the 'ships in 4-6 weeks' is on the main page of the listing also. i only know because i was confident that it was there and so i searched for it. amazon is good, but they can't make things appear out of thin air when nobody else has them...

You right, I posted the url I followed from the "See more phone data" link on the main t650 page.

On Amazon, the price without a contract is $599, and the price with a contract is $569. If only they didn't say 4-6 weeks, but oh well.

You can not buy it without a contract on Amazon.
