Here are the results of a study conducted in the SF/Oakland Bay Area detailing what is provided by each of the leading carriers. An objective scale for GSM/GPRS, CDMA 1xRTT, and GSM/Edge speeds are reported. You have to draw your own conclusions and make the applicable connections to carriers in your area and what speeds will satisfy your Treo 650 needs. Keep in mind, the study was conducted in 2003 and some of the carriers might be offering new services, for instance, Cingular now offers EDGE data services. Finally, there are links for similar data gathered for NYC and Southern Cali.

The will be true if free hotspots become the norm, but pay spots are still likely at airports and "commercial centers." I don't want to pay for wi-fi connectivity, ever.
