If true, this flies in the face of PalmOne's much-touted-by-them "family of TREOs" idea - carriers dropping TREO 600s doesn't help that, eh?

(and Sprint only has about 800 TREOs in stock!?)

If the carriers do not see a great deal of differentiation between the 600 and the 650, then they may conclude that it is not in their best interest to carry both.

someone leaking internal memos? This is getting to be a dangerous board to be associated with!

Indeed - and THAT sentiment is exactly what I've been discussing elsewhere w.r.t. how THE customer-set that has bought the largest quantities of the TREO line, early-adopter geeks as nicely represented here on TreoCentral, seemingly is perceiving the TREO 650 - not a great deal of "differentiation" (nee "improvement").

    =======

Aside - How long before TreoCentral kowtows to Sprint and removes the first post of this thread - or the entire thread?

Relax, I take this to mean that they are discontinuing the not-so-great camera version and the non-camera version will become the lower-end model of the Treo family. Or that they have upgraded the camera and will release a Treo 600 with a better camera and hope no one notices.

ok what in the hell. if this is true im gonna have to lose it. i cant use an a500 for that long!!!!

I'm confused. It looks to me like that memo is just saying that there is no projected end-of-life in '04 for the cameraless Treo 600. Why's that a bad thing? And it says nothing about the 600 w/camera. Am I missing something?

Many carriers support and sell the Treo 600. Unless all curriers are ending the 600's life, they could still have a (happy) family.

He's always like that, Hood. He loves it when you make a comment about his nickname and the fact that he has over 1200 posts... He about blew his top when I made fun of it.

From THE most optimistic POV that is quite correct, though it pretty strongly belittles Sprint's place in the "TREO world".

Interestingly, the lead post of this thread shows that the camera-less version of the 600 is not being EOL'd this year:

No EOL in '04 No Camera Palm One Treo 600 POTR600NC 1,198 No issues $599.99
They might have decided to carry the 600 camera-less only. This addresses the differentiation point made above by jw68.
  18. #18
Yes - that line could mean any number of things from "Unable to sell any cameraless TREO 600s to enterprises so still have too many in stock to EOL it" to "We're gonna sell a gajillion cameraless TREO 600s to enterprise and let the geeks have the TREO 650".

    And everything in between.

    Ain't ambiguity fun?
  19. #19
As an end user, I don't mind this "ambiguity". Heck this was an internal memo. Not knowing the gory details of some company's sales strategy and inventory/sell-through levels mean nothing to me. All I care about is whether I can buy the phone I want, which currently is the 650. It seems that I will be able to later this year.

Not only is this 'memo' very ambiguous, but it is provided to us publicly in spite of the clear markings that it is proprietary, confidential, and for internal use only. So, while I certainly mean no offense to Nerd because I have no idea how Nerd obtained the memo in the first place, I have to question the memo's authenticity, particulary because if it is indeed a Sprint memo, it is apparently being provided to us by someone that is treading far into the gray area of ethics (not to mention legality) in divulging secrets that Sprint clearly intended to keep...uh...secret.

Nerd, I don't know where you got the memo, so I do not intend by this post to insult you in any way. Heck, I appreciate you sharing the info regardless of its ambiguity/authenticity/propriety!
