I like the idea of bluetooth, particularly to get rid of the headset wire. But while talking to a friend in Scotland he says to forget bluetooth for security reasons.

I could be all wrong about this, but as he explained it since Europe already has a lot of bluetooth phones there is a real potential that your phone service can get hijacked in any public place (train, bus, restaurant, concert, etc.).

So are new devices, especially the 650, more secure than the older bluetooth devices? Should I be worried about getting a 650 and using bluetooth in public within the US?

With a 30' range and two paired devices using security it is very unlikely anything would happen.
