Major Press Release, Pocket Tunes users:

NormSoft and GlooLabs Announce Partnership to Enable Mobile Music on
    Palm Powered Smart Mobile Devices
NormSoft to Launch New Service Providing Access to Home Music
    Collections

MUNICH, Germany, September 28, 2004 – At the PalmSource™ Euro
    DevCon
2004, NormSoft, Inc. and GlooLabs, Inc. today announced a
partnership to launch a service that allows mobile users to navigate
and listen to their home music collection using the award winning
Pocket Tunes Deluxe application. To be released in Q4 of 2004, the
service will be hosted by NormSoft and powered by GlooLabs'
    GlooNetTM technology.

"We believe Pocket Tunes Deluxe is a perfect example of the
innovation achieved through the powerful and flexible Palm OS®
platform," said Larry Slotnick, chief products officer,
PalmSource. "We look forward to continued innovation on the part
    of
our Palm OS® software developers, such as Normsoft, to deliver a
superior user experience for Palm PoweredTM smartphones and other
    wireless devices."

"Imagine turning your TreoTM 600 from palmOne into a wireless,
    MP3
player with access to your entire home music collection," said
    David
Arfin, CEO of GlooLabs. "With GlooNet and Pocket Tunes, users
    will
be able to listen to their music anytime, anywhere."

The Pocket Tunes service for Palm OS will allow users to browse
their music collections and playlists stored on any home computer.
The selected music can be streamed to any Palm Powered smart mobile
devices via WiFi hotspots or mobile data services. Users will have
access to their entire music collection wherever they may be,
without requiring significant memory on their Palm Powered
smartphone or wireless handheld. The service will automatically
transcode music files stored on the home computer to an appropriate
rate based on the available bandwidth.

"This GlooLabs powered service will bring an entirely new value
    to
the streaming capabilities of Pocket Tunes Deluxe," said Mark
Belliveau, director of business relations at NormSoft. "No longer
will users be frustrated having to decide which audio files to copy
to their Palm Powered smartphones or wireless handhelds."

How cool is that? I was never able to figure out how to set up a Shoutcast station for my music - this sounds very neat!

So will this download music to your SD card or just stream? If I read this correctly, it's just streaming so I find it rather useless with a GPRS connection. Now if they could cache a song or two before playing, I feel that would give the user a much cleaner experience...

None the less a cool idea even though you could already do it with a shoutcast stream at home.

Wow!!! This is exactly what I've been waiting for.

Yeah, but if I still can't play any of the WMA or AAC files with DRM (for those that download songs legally) then what's the point?

wma=ms is dragging their feet with this. normsoft had intended this to be a part of the 3.0 release, but have to keep pushing it back until MS comes through.

aac=other then i tunes and real player (who had to reverse engineer it), who supports aac drm?

You can already do this with slimserver (http://www.slimdevices.com/index.html). Lets you setup a web page with easy access from the Treo so you can control what's playing on your stream.

I have a shoutcast server that streams the music I want... I have a slim web interface (treo friendly) that allows me to switch playlist and then it seamlessly switches to the new playlist after the current song is done. Its pretty easy to do if you an old machine lying around and don't mind putting linux on it.

Is there anyway to do this with Windows XP? I also have a wireless network streaming the music to my Tivo.

Bemused Server + Winamp 5 + Shoutcast Server (and plugin) + Playlists of your own music + Treo 600 + Pocket Tunes Deluxe (to stream from ShoutCast Server) + BTAmp (to access Bemused Server) + Internet = Same ability today

I'm a ambidextrous platform user. I use Mac & PC. Mac for video, graphics, music, etc... PC for business (MS Office, acct., etc...) and internet.
