Hi, I have a quick question:

I love the concept of the Treo but wonder whether I would have to put up with not being able to receive calls while the unit is syncing?

Also, are there any external keyboard solutions that work? (I am currently using the newer model of the Palm keyboard and find it indispensable.)

    Thanks,

    Ben

do you mean syncing as in hotsyncing? (with the cradle or cable) I don't think you could receive a call during a hotsync (though I've never tested this) but I can't see how this could possibly be an issue unless you're hoysyncing 50 times per day or something.

All alerts are disabled during hotsync, including phone calls. They probably go straight to voicemail. Not a problem though, I've always synced while taking a shower.

Thanks Minsc and ThirdType: That's what I thought. I agree that it shouldn't be a problem - but I also remember how long installing apps / troubleshooting probs can take.. I suppose that ideally one should have a cloned SIM card in one's backup phone - hmm.. that's a good idea, actually. Now, how about the keyboard? I suppose the IR keyboard should work?

If its the same IR keybaord people use here, then yes. I personally use the one made specifically for the Treo 600 and love it. Im using it right now. The IR one does not have dedicated number keys, won't charge the device, and IIRC does not have proper nav keys. Only issue with mine is that I cannot plug in a headset while using it, although when the external battery is attached I can. There is someone with a mod to fix that but he hasn't come through yet. The biggest problem though is that the next Treo is supposed to have a different connector, so it may not work. Maybe there will be an adapter, maybe not. IR might be the best choice if future cost is a concern.

BTW installing apps takes almost no time, even very large games etc. I don't know which device you have now but newer devices sync much faster than older ones. I was also hesitant to use an all-in-one device but I am sooooo glad I did It took some getting used to having my Palm make/take phone calls but now it feels natural. The Treo 600 with a Seidio 2-in-1 headset is a dream come true

no true - you can receive a call while syncing - it will ring but you can't answer it

Hmm that may have changed between firmwares. Shortly after I bought it in November someone called me while I was syncing and IIRC I only got the voicmail alert when it was done. 3rd party software could affect this also.

The phone call goes straight to voice mail, in my experience. It has happened to me once, where the voice mail notification occurred immediately after finishing the hotsync.

Thanks! Yes, it would be nice not to have to dispose of accessories all the time. I don't actually mind the missing number keys - makes the keyboard smaller/lighter. Of course I don't use it to enter numbers, either.. Infrared.. More batteries to buy..

I have a M515 and it is quite slow to hotsync - and painfully slow to install bigger files. Which doesn't matter now that I'm back to just using the PIMs.. but it would be nice to have excel/fileMaker on a larger screen. So perhaps I should just wait for the 650. Unless I see the 600 on sale for a steal, as I know myself..

    Best,

    Ben
