I can not believe the ammount of knowledge that is in this group. Many of you are amazing. Let me ask all of you a question, that I asked before...it appears that I may have stuped the group? Do you know of any External Antenna that can be connected to the Treo? If you do can you tell me about how you have used it and the results. I live in Utah where signal strength on the Sprint Network has been a very trying.

Can anyone answer this? Also in a message there was a link to sprintsites.com I can not get the site to send me a confirmation email. Does anyone know the trick to this site?

Thanks for all you are teaching me here.

I dont know where to get the actual antenna but, if you look on the back of the treo, there is a pretty standard antenna jack for most car kits

remove the antenna and use a coat hanger. believe it or not, it works.

but since you don't want to look like a moron on the streets, i would go for producer's suggestion.

Maybe you could paint the coathanger some funky neon color and have the latest craze in cell phone accessories

This is good, do external antennas use more battery power?

Almost any method that improves reception and signal retention will use LESS BATTERY POWER.

With a passive antenna you can expect a 3 db gain (typical) and for stationary applications 7 db to 12 db is not unusual.

3 db Signal Gain is usually achieved by switching from an omni directional pattern to a toroidal pattern.

Speaking to the issue of reception:
Using a 3 db gain antenna with my Sprint PCS AirPrime 3220 and Verizon AirPrime 5200 1xEV-DO Card Bus Laptop Cards can make the difference between "No Signal" and 2 bars.

The Treo's Tx/Rx power is regulated for optimal results. When you have signal constancy, the power usage is throttled down. With a passive 3 db gain antenna, less power is required for Tx because you are no longer a spherical point source. You get an improvement on the inverse square law.

This may be a stupid question, but does AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, or Cingular have better reception where you are? Are you locked into Sprint or can you change carriers? Might be an option, if the antenna deal doesn't work out

I've passed on references to www.sprintsites.com - until now

Primary Cell Site infrastructure Buildout or required secondary and tertiary infrastructure imporvement has a constant impediment - local Zoning Boards.

As a result, if you've got a tower - it can be a "cash cow".

In this case www.sprintsites.com is what it says it is.

Cell Tower location is "closely-held information". The following link does reference Sprint PCS Tower locations.

    http://www.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/coverage/towermaps.html

If you study detail sections of the linked map, it becomes clear that the indicated tower locations are purposfully inaccurate.

This doesn't matter because 60% of toady's cell sites are hidden behind building facades, mounted on billboards, etc.

To know what Cell Site(s) are in your location

    - use ##33284 [dial] - it brings up the Debug Parameters Screen.

You have some reception, but your problem may or may not be remediable.

It helps to use a combination of tools:
    • ##33284 [dial]
    • USGS Map of your area
    • GPS to plot ACTIVE Cell Site Locations and Antenna Bank Numbers

AT&T does have better reception where I am. Sprint has promsied to improve reception in this area so we have stuck with them... I use both services just in case sprint fails me. I hate to have to do that though.
ArcBody, your posts are extremely impressive, what is your background?
Thanks for the great help! I knew I could not stump this group!! :-)

However, the MalcomWireless company appears to have a lot of misleading information all over its web site.

It seems that they do not even provide a simple connector allowing you to connect a Treo 600 to any external antenna.

Also, if you go to the following link, you see an "internal antenna booster" under the heading "Handspring Treo 600", but, in fact, the installation instructions say "remove battery"
(Wouldn't that void warranty on Treo 600?)
    http://www.malcomwireless.com/wirele...27&phoneid=358

Based on the information I saw, MalcomWireless does not look like a company I would want to do business with.

A previous post spoke of at least one company that was attempting to design an external antenna with hook in for the back of the treo 600. A month ago they were saying 3 to 6 months, if memory serves me right.

    I sure would buy this

A challenge was posted - "Stump the Group"

My response began @ 12:35 AM today and contained a considerable amount of factual information, spread over several posts.

When I write - "Haven't tried it yet" - understand my meaning.

I use an Andrews Corp. / Antenna Specialists PCS in-building repeater:
    • Yagi Donor External Antenna
    • Bi-Directional Amp
    • Panel Indoor Antenna
    http://www.antenna.com/repeaters/eac50_pcs.html

I discussed this system with Marcus of TreoCentral, in April '04 and did not recommend TreoCentral offer it, because of the extensive modifications and testing required, in my circumstance.

Having explained why I don't recommend it - it works for me.

As with all equipment, there is a performance envelope and dynamic variables. Sprint PCS has been running many in-building repeater trials and they will not sell or endorse any unit (yet).

I have not endorsed a product that I don't think you will be able to use with satisfactory results.

I called Malcom Wireless @ 800-360-0446, late today & Spoke to a "Tech Rep" regarding:

    http://www.malcomwireless.com/wirele...62&phoneid=358

I was told, "this unit is designed for the Car Kit Only and the Direct Phone Antenna is in Beta Testing".

A satisfactory response was not forthcoming regarding the ETA of a Direct Phone Passive External Antenna.

Because the "Tech Talk" was incorrect, I explained what Wilson Electronics or another firm must do to activate the antenna connector of the T600.

My name, phone # and email was noted by the Malcom Wireless Tech Rep.

I have been asked to Beta for Wilson, by the Malcom Tech Rep. and I said (as per usual) "it would be my pleasure".

If they follow through, I'll be pleased to assist

    - IF THEY FOLLOW THROUGH.

I stand by my recommended method of Screen Cleaning:
    • Unused micro fiber cloth
    • If you require liquid: C3H8O
    • w/ anionic surfactants
    I make errors and mistakes.
If you view my posts you will find 2 that come to mind.
    I acknowledge my errors.

    Anything else?

    OwnUtah ~ Kind words

I'm about stick my foot in my mouth

Fred was really very smart. (Pic Attached)

His ability to decode this world amazed me.

Fred tought me many things, some by example.

Calculus and Differential Equations exemplify a realm of thought and understanding that exceeded his consciousness.

Clearly we intuit a profound barrier, to Fred's knowing.

We are not much beyond Fred's potential for understanding.

Stumping the TreoCentral Fourm can be accomplished by our youngest members questions.

So what is the most useful aspect of our collective effort?

Esprit de corps - semper fidelis - Always Faithful

I am new to TreoCentral, and discovered something that amazed me.

    In a word - "gfunkmagic"

There are a few members who follow by example.

Gifting hard fought, hard won knowledge selflessly.

    We are fortunate.

As with my good friend Fred, I have learned much from gfunkmagic.
