Just got this from AvantGo today...

    Dear AvantGo subscriber,

Our records indicate that you are currently subscribed to a channel, such as Virtually There, that requires AvantGo software to be set to a preference of "Use Secure Connection" (SSL encryption enabled).

Please note that if you are using AvantGo to sync securely, you need to update to the latest version of our software by August 1, 2004, or you will be prevented from synchronizing with the AvantGo servers. Please update now by visiting http://my.avantgo.com/ssl from your desktop computer. Your AvantGo login is required to reach this page.

    Thank you,

    The AvantGo team

Worse still, I often get a "connection to this page didn't work" message, I click home and then I get to AvantGo. SO I think sometimes the ad doesn't sync correctly.

But other than that...you know, it's a free service. They have to pay for somehow. Defeat the ads--and pay money. Those are the choices. There is no free lunch. I don't begrudge them trying to advertise.
If it doesn't have a slot for SDHC--I don't want it. Period.

I just downloaded the update (as suggested here). Is it my imagination or did the app just double in size from 1 meg to 2 megs. There is a second file called "avantgo_ami_en.prc" (that is just under 1 meg), does this need to be installed along with the other files? Obviosly, I have downloaded the update, but not installed it yet.

Also, there is a file called "libsmal.prc", I am assuming this replaces the libmal.prc file. So can I delete the old one?

    Thanks

I installed them all - from my card and it asked to overwrite everything...

so far so good. Using the card to store everything. It's damn slow on the Treo compared with my T3, though I am sure that part of that is reading from the card.

You might want to try this page on AvantGo. It will help you configure y9our device and computer so that it will work seamlessly. You have to have to be a registered user already.

mine: WA state ferry schedule, word of the month, accuweather.

one thing that drives me nuts is how some of the channels seem to resist updaring their zip codes (i.e., hollywood.com, modileconcierge)
    Off to iPhone land...

Howdy-- A couple things.... First, I use AvantGo with Mac OS X. There is a free conduit available (called MAL conduit), which is available thru avantgo.com. You just put the conduit in the same folder with your other conduits, and it will sync avantgo fine. Second, you can add/delete channels both thru the treo, and thru logging into avantgo.com. I would suggest going thru avantgo.com. You will see a huge selection of channels, including the NY Times (which I use-- iti provides 3 sections-- news, tech, and business). Enjoy....

I'll second the recommendation for MAL Conduit... download it from VersionTracker.com.

There is also Missing Sync from Mark/Space -- that lets you use your Internet Sharing to download AvantGo content directly (and quickly) in addition to being a better, faster HotSync architecture.

But MAL Sync is great (and works with Missing Sync) -- since it makes AvantGo work the way it used to, all part of the same HotSync procedure. I HotSync everyday, get new content, and then if I'm traveling and want an update "now" -- I just do initiate a wireless update. The only problem with this is that when I return home and do a regular HotSync, I find I have to do it *twice* for AvantGo to work. If I only do it once it says I have no content. The 2nd HotSync fixes it.

My other problem is that even though I tell AvantGo to "always stay offline" (since the content is usually refreshed every morning with the HotSync) every time I go to it, it tries to fetch new online content. I have to command-z a few times to force it to "disconnect" so I can click through the links quickly.

I'm going to try updating my app but I am pretty sure I have the newest. Other than those two things it works fine and happily with OS X.

For what it's worth, I have the same issue. I enjoy reading news after it's downloaded, but get annoyed that it tries to connect when I know it's in memory.

Surprisingly, when I sync wirelessly, it's acceptable. I sync before the plane doors close so I can read something while on the plane.

It will not update if you go to the Channels Menu and select "Work Offline". Unfortunately there does not appear to be any way to select this permanently and everytime you run Avantgo, you need to select it.
