What should we expect since it is likely there will be something new by fall or winter? How far in advance does Palmone announce info about new models. It seems like we knew about the Treo 600 pretty far in advance but that was Handspring.

Announcing a new model generally kills sales of the existing models...so expect Palm to wait as long as possible. Unless inventory on the 600 is already low.

    My prediction: August 15

    Just a guess.
    Palm V-->Visor Deluxe-->Visor Prism-->Visorphone-->Treo 180-->Treo 600-->Treo 650 on Sprint-->Treo 700p-->Centro-->Diamond-->Pre-->HTC EVO 4g???!
  4. #4
bingo, I was just about to say either august or early september.

kschoenberg has it right. with T600 sales still going strong and with the upcoming $2m advertsing investment the last thing palmone will do is announce far in advance of release. my prediction is no news or availability until fourth quarter (after Sept 30th) with units going on sale late oct, early nov, leaving plenty of time for xmas.
    Off to iPhone land...

I just do not see Palm One changing the Treo to his res till 2006.

2004 is basically gone. 2005 is too soon. 2006 is just right.

Slow? Oh yeah. But the truth is the competition has continued to make fatal mistakes: phones that are too big, too heavy, too thick, no keyboard.

The competition will get it right after two more iterations, and that is when Palm One will finally move.

People are not buying the "phone that looks like a big Palm" look. And the Treo is the only one that gets it.

But its almost 2006 anyway! Go Perot!

Mgauss, I think yer in a small time warp...

However, early 2005 sounds about right to me for The Next Great Thing.

I, for once, agree with mgauss in that P1 will push back the next unit as far as possible. Not as far as 2006 - but 2nd half 2005. What financial motivation does P1 have to commit resources to another unit when there is really no competition right now and the 600 is selling so well? At earliest, I would think late October/early November. And if the XMAS season comes and goes without a new one - I wouldn't think the new one would be out until 2nd half 2005. And that they just coughed up $2M into advertising - and I've recently seen the advertisements in airports everywhere - tells me that I don't expect a new one by XMAS season.

If I were P1, I would just keep developing and improving the next generation prototype until someone announces a product that could be viewed as legitimate competition for the 600. Then I would trump it with beginning production of the new Treo.
ROOTING for WebOS makes me more sympathetic to Cubs fans.

Now if PalmOne could only make a Treo600 that I don't have to send back due to CR@P build quality, then they'd really have it goin' on

There is no overt hard evidence that the TREO 600 is selling welll to end-customers.

If you have that hard evidence, please post a link to it.

[note - today is the earnings call - maybe PalmOne will finally reveal some sell-THROUGH numbers. Maybe the Sun will rise in the west, too]

You may be right, but I believe PalmOne will upgrade for the same reasons software companies issue upgrades: To spur interest and gain additional income from all of us and new users. If PalmOne issues a high-res treo at a reasonable price, I will probably upgrade. Otherwise, PalmOne won't be getting any of my cash.

My inside sources at Sprint tell me within 2 months...

As someone who used to work very closely with large tech companies...I can tell you "consumer goods" product launches usually happen sometime in (or around) October because they are gearing up for Christmas sales. Some products may launch beginning of September for "Back-to-school", but I don't believe the Treo is one of those devices "student devices". Most companies wouldn't consider launching a product like this in the summer time.

For the record...I am not giving my opinion on whether or not a new device will be launched...I am really not sure. Only Palm knows! Just trying to clarify the likelihood for your July/August hopefuls. ;-)

Why couldn't the ad campaign just be part of a strategy in anticipation of the new updated Treo release?

Anyway, it has now been nearly 11 months since the Treo600 was initially leaked here on Treocentral via the famous JH pic where he was grasping the Treo600 and the contributions of nrosser etc. And almost 9 months now since it began shipping in significant quantities to various wireless providers. To put it succinctly, the Treo600 is real "old-school" in mobile phone years. PalmOne may want to squeeze as much life out of the current model as possible, but the product cycle is definitely near the end. If PalmOne doesn't release a new model by late this year, it would be one of the biggest blunders ever and they will have ceded almost any momentum in the market they currently may have... Lets' hope otherwise...

prediction: Treo "ace" Q4 Oct: 04

actually, funk, I sighted the bad boy the first week in June of last year (I considered writing up a long 'my what a year it's been' thread - but oh well), so it's been just a little longer than a year.....and I wonder if our man Jake E is lurking again, pondering whether to call up ol' Jeffie one final time to try and gain another audience with him...

Ahh...yes I stand corrected! Btw, I hope you find yourself lurking around the "Treo Ace" so you can once again break the news here at Treocentral! Considering how much traffic has increased around here, it would be even crazier than the original thread!!

PalmOne has already said that there will be several models of Treos available.

So if you think of the Treo being a product line rather than a single product, witholding new models is not optimal. Getting many products at different points on the price / performance curve yields a larger market and makes it tougher for competitors to get a foot in the door. Also, if done correctly, any ads for the Treo would be general enough to cover a range of features, so running a big campagne now would not rule out new models arriving soon.

I'd expect the next Treo ( Treo lite? Treo Max?) to be out in September with more to come out in March.
