I'm looking for a better application to replace the stock Contacts app.

Specifically, I need it to search better.

I have a few thousand records exported from my unix app where although almost all of the records contain a name, the field I really need to search by is "company"

I've tried playing games with changing the export process to put the full name in first name and the company name in the last name field etc but haven't been able to get the stock app to be properly useful.

I know it would be slow, but ideally I'd like it to be able to search all fields, memo's etc... Not every time as it would be too slow, but as an option.

I kind of _don't_ like how the regular search function from the phone app searches all applications. I have a few books and a bunch of jfile and handbase databases with lots of text in them and the damned search funtion sometimes searches all these other apps before it searches the <expletive> contacts database! and no way to skip ahead. I have to arrow down and over to the "find more" just to get another screenful of irrelevant junk several times before it even gets to the contacts. Pretty agrevating being in the phone app, hitting the search keys, and having it look for the word in such clever places as the chess and spy hunter games.

Then again... It's probably only thanks to this otherwise ludicrous behaviour that if/when I find a better contacts app that I will be able to seamlessly search it right from the phone app.

I think I may have almost answered my own question by indicating that I happen to have both jfile and handbase (and hbforms) so if there are "apps" that consist of a handbase or jfile database I can use 'em.

    Thanks.

TAKEphONE is an excellent overlay for the builtin contact program and has vastly superior searching ability. You should really give it a try....look for it at palmgear.com

    Contacts5 is my choice (www.pdaperformance.com)

Yes, there seems to be a flaw in the way the default Phone and TakePhone applications handles sending contacts to receipants. It seems that we cannot sms the contacts but need to send an mms mail.

    Is there a workaround?

Unfortunately Contacts5 is slow in searches. TakePhone is far superior here. Contacts5 does not support the Treo600 navigation keys.

    Hi,

If you install TAKEphONE 6.00, you should be able to select the SMS app for that in the prefs.

I tried changing the Emails applicationbut it only has one option MMS. Is there a bug? Why does it not allow other email operations?

Is this the part you are referring to to send contacts via sms?

Not sure I understand - you are trying to use the SMS application as an EMAIL application ?
