    hmmm

i want to try this out
i have card connected, right click on drive, format

    shows me capacity of card

file system: i will pick fat32

allocation unit size: default allocation size (only option in drop down)

format options, quick format check box option

where would i pick 32k clusters or is there a way to tell if it was already formated that way on treo 700p?

    (format f: /FS:FAT32 /A:32K)..

i formatted through DOS by above command

another run with nothing installed on card: VFSMark = 698
    4GB Transcend 150X SD Card

    File Create: 113%
    File Delete: 87%

    card speed test

    wrt32bit: 22 bytes/sec
    wrt8kb: 43910 bytes/sec
    read8kb: 3276800 bytes/sec

    rating: poor,use only....

i dont think this program works with 4gb cards, lol

i installed all programs back on card

    another run : VFSMark = 696
    4GB Transcend 150X SD Card

    File Create: 110%
    File Delete: 84%
    File Write: 15%

    DB Export: 64%
    DB Import: 72%

so formatting it with 32k clusters looked like it speaded up things a bit

Most cards > 2GB take a hit on write and delete performance. Not sure why but they do. I've read some explanations but I don't think anyone's proven why.

Also, there's a performance hit with FAT32 vs. FAT.

    I have a Treo 700p.
    SD Card - Connect 3d, 4GB

I ran the test twice. First time after letting the Treo format the card. I then added my basic into to the card.

    VFSMark Results - (Treo Formatted)

    File Create: 230%
    File Delete: 222%
    File Write: 10%
    File Read: 195%
    File Seek: 2950%
    DB Export: 57%
    DB Import: 75%
    Record Access: 476%
    Resource Access: 564%

    VFSMark: 531
    ---------------

I then formatted the card with my pc in Dos as per the instruction in this thread, (format (your SD card drive letter): /FS:FAT32 /A:32K), and ran the test again. I added the same info onto the card as in the first test.

VFSMark Results - (PC Dos Formatted)

    File Create: 59%
    File Delete: 49%
    File Write: 98%
    File Read: 202%
    File Seek: 2950%
    DB Export: 70%
    DB Import: 95%
    Record Access: 458%
    Resource Access: 564%

    VFSMark: 505
    ----------------------

So, some very interesting changes there from the first test to the second test. Odd? Anyone got any thoughts on that???

I got a new card. Transcend 4GB SD 150x (not sdhc) for $42.00....

    http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820163159

Here are the results straight out of the carton with no formatting done by myself:
    File Create: 79%
    File Delete: 36%
    File Write: 20%
    File Read: 814%
    File Seek: 2950%
    DB Export: 45%
    DB Import: 83%
    Record Access: 1167%
    Resource Access: 1129%

    VFSMark: 702

Well, a few days later, and the Transcend 4GB card is working GREAT. It has not unloaded one time. Whew!
  12. #92
Well, I finally re-formatted the Transcend 4GB 150x SD card. I formatted in XP Computer Managment, Fat32, 32K clusters, quick format.

    Here are the results:

    File Create: 91%
    File Delete: 37%
    File Write: 20%
    File Read: 814%
    File Seek: 3933%
    DB Export: 56%
    DB Import: 64%
    Record Access: 1005%
    Resource Access: 960%

    VFSMark: 775

So, a minor improvment overall. File Seek went up A LOT.

It definitely is the way to go, but the Transcend 4GB SD card is just not very fast when it comes to writing on the 700p. It's better than many other 4GB SD cards, but it just doesn't compare to the Transcend SDHC Class 6 cards. (I'm assuming the 4GB SDHC Class 6 would fly as fast as my 8GB SDHC Class 6.)

I'm trying to decide whether to move from a Transcend 8GB class 2 SDHC to a class 6 and have been running vfsmark on all my cards. The numbers I'm getting are oddly different than some of the ones I've seen here. I wonder if it's the 1.10 firmware. Some examples (all FAT32):

    Transcend 8GB Class 2
    write: 180%
    VFSmark: 812

    Transcend 2GB 150x
    write: 389%
    VFSmark: 792

    ATP 1GB
    write: 56%
    VFSmark: 794

    Patriot 4GB
    write: 25%
    VFSmark: 768

    Connect3D 2GB
    write: 11%
    VFSMark: 698

(If I get the 8GB class 6, I'll post that result here as well.)

Very poor write results - I notice it too when copying to it on my PC. The card only has 1 GB of usable memory since the rest are listed as bad sectors.
