While travelling recently I was resetting the time zone and encountered an inconsistency between the set time zone function and the city time utility I have on my Treo 600. Now the set time zone function is frozen at GMT-5. While I can change the other 3 options (date, time, daylight savings) on that screen, this one does nothing. (Actually I get a box and if I keep touching the screen I can see 7 settings from Afghanistan to Bangladesh, highlighted in dark blue. But can't select them.)

Have tried soft reset but that doesn't fix issue. Appreciate any thoughts re fix. thanks

I had (have) the same problem specially when I change to GMT +5.30 - which is India time. Contacted Help Desk and was told that it was a documented bug and a patch will be out (this is 3 months ago).
I did a FW upgrade from 1.x to 2.08 - this still existed. I then did a FW upgrade to 3.04 (for various other reasons and not for this problem) and then this Citytime was working fine. I was not happy with 3.04 so I downgraded backto 2.08 and I still have the above problem - However other things such phone not loosing signal on and off is better and I am happy!

I had the same problem when I was traveling recently (I'm back in the US right now, but the problem stays). I guess I'll just look forward to this patch, whenever it's released. Thanks, asand.

    What a great community!!

I just found this thread after encountering the identical problem. Probably saved me 45 minutes if I had gone through Sprint -- thanks!

I'm now on firmware v1.20, so the bug was not addressed then.

I thought it might be related to the fact that I use Pimlico Software's Datebook5, since that includes some time zone functionality. Not sure if the other compatriots use this product.

I've also used WorldMate in the past, but it is no longer resident on my device.

Just spoke to Sprint regarding this issue.

"Level 2" trouble specialist named Rick informed me that this is not a documented problem, and Sprint does not support an issue like this.

According to Rick, my only options are to bring my device to the Sprint store where they can try flashing the software or simply swap out my device.

Not a very appealing scenario given that except for this small glitch, my hardware is working fine.

Rick stated that this is a "Palm issue", not within the scope of Sprint and gave me Palm's toll-free number.

Me: "Well, don't you communicate with Palm about product issues".
Level 2 Rick: "No, we do not."
Me: "Then, how do you even learn about the Treo?"
    Rick: "On the fly."

Oh well, I tried. Once I realized the conversation was going nowhere, I quickly ended it.

Not the end of the world -- I set my Date & Time Preferences to "Enable Local Network Time" and just won't be able to use "City Time" properly.

    Good luck.

    Boss, you are lucky.

Same problem here. CityTime choose the wrong time zone automatically. If you go via Prefs->Date&Time->Time Zone Set, the system hangs. Handspring support told me this IS a documented problem. I am still awaiting a fix now for 9 months.

A friend of mine who works for Handspring wrote a quick fix for City Time in about 5 minutes. The Prefs he said would involve some core OS work. All was fine till my Treo600 blew its speaker and needed replacement. Now I am back with the BUGGY City Time. If he could fix it in 5 minutes, I am wondering what in the blue blazes is Handspring doing with ALL those developers sitting there ?

Below I am posting a thread between tech support and me regarding the city time function. It appears that PalmOne has outsourced its tech support to Sykes. I do not know whether it is Sykes in the US or in India or where. Any clues anyone ????

But please see the thread. It has taken 15 days!!!! and three people for someone to even read my complaint. Forget a resolution.

    >>>>>
    Alden

You are the third person answering my mail and the FIRST person who appears to have read my mail and answered. At the outset my thanks.

First Syd on July 05. Then Lex on July 14, now you on July 20.

I am getting really tired with PalmOne support which is outsourced to Sykes.

How long and how many people does it take PalmOne support (outsourced to Sykes in India ? or USA ?) to respond and revert to a simple query ?

Can you please identify whether you actually work for PalmOne or are you outsourced in Sykes ? In which country you are actually located ?

It appears that Sykes does not train you guys to read. If you cannot resolve my problem then escalate it to someone who actually works for Palm in the USA.

My error is NOT with the updater. I have resolved the updater and informed you that FileZ obstructs the updater and may be Palm would like to verify my report and put in their KnowledgeBase to help other Treo 600 users.

CITY TIME / TIME ZONE Error

Please READ my INITIAL bug report!!!!! Item 2 (almost at the bottom of this e-mail).

Reproduced for your ease of reading and for recommending corrective action.

There is still a bug with City Time and Time under the Prefs application.

Time zone is set to India. Home city is set to Bangalore. Launch City time and it forces me to change time zone to Pakistan and select a home city as either Islamabad or Karachi.

In Prefs the time zone is indicated to GMT +5 instead of the correct GMT +5.30. When you tap on the time zone within Prefs->Time, the Treo 600 just hangs and you are forced to use the reset button at the back of the unit.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>

My problem is with the City Time function and the time zone error in Prefs which hangs my Treo. Can you offer a solution or not ? You try the steps that you have just pulled out of the KB and try. IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!

I have even tried via "Hard Reset" which requires me the re-setup the Treo 600 including the time zone. Which I set to GMT +5.5 (the correct zone for India). The moment you choose City Time again, the problem re-starts and you have to choose a city in Pakistan (Islamabad or Karachi) and the time zone goes back to GMT +5 and the if you choose Prefs->Date&Time->Set Time Zone the Treo will hang.

I would sincerely appreciate a solution if you can offer it. If you are unable, then please inform me and escalate this to PalmOne direct.

Subject: Treo / Visor Support [Case ID #: 212327]

    Dear Devesh,

Thank you for contacting palmOne™ Technical Support. My name is Alden and I will be assisting you with regard to your query regarding the date/time/time-zone bug.

You may see this “General error” while running the Treo 600 Updater (info). If this happens, perform a soft reset.

    Still happens?

If a soft reset doesn't work, you might wish to try the "hard reset method" of clearing memory to temporarily accommodate the Treo 600 Updater:

On your desktop computer, cancel the installation of the Treo 600 Updater.

On your smartphone, perform a hard reset. Remember, a hard reset will erase everything on your device. Make sure your data is being backed up: Some third-party applications change the way your handheld backs up data. Other third-party applications do not back up data. If you have third-party software on your device, please contact the developer to learn what components are backed up during a HotSync operation, and if any HotSync conduits are altered. Make sure the HotSync conduit action is set to "synchronize the files" for the components you want to back up, and that the data is actually being backed up.

Any data not backed up will be lost.

Perform a HotSync operation with your desktop computer. You will be asked for a user name. Do not use your old user name. Instead, create a new user name (such as "temp1") and select OK.

On your desktop computer, run the Treo 600 Updater installer again. During the upgrade process, you'll be asked to pick a device to apply the update to. Choose the new user name (such as "temp1") that you created. Then continue following the system upgrade instructions, which will include a HotSync operation that transfers the system, upgrade to your device.

After installing the system upgrade, perform another hard reset. This wipes out the temporary user name and temporarly user data, but does not affect the ROM that you just upgraded

Perform another HotSync operation. When asked for your user name, select the user name you were using before you changed it. Your personal data and applications should be restored to your device during synchronization.

    No, that didn't help either

If you continue to see the "General error" each time you attempt to install the Treo 600 Updater, you may wish to contact palmOne Customer Care for advanced troubleshooting.

With regard to your problem with the City Time program, please refer to the solution below:

To choose a home city that has already been entered into CityTime:

    1. Open the Applications launcher.

    2. Select All from the category list in the top right corner of the screen.

    3. Tap the CityTime icon.

    4. Access the Menu launcher.

    5. From the Options menu choose Select Home City.

    6. Choose your home city from the list of those available.

Note: By selecting your home city in CityTime, you are calibrating the map display with the system time already set on your handheld. Changing your home city in CityTime will not automatically adjust your system time. If you want to change your system time setting, open the Applications launcher, tap Prefs, choose General from the pull down menu in the top right corner of the screen, and tap on the current time to change it.

What if your home city doesn't appear in CityTime?

You can add new cities to CityTime. See our article on creating a new home city for details.

We hope this issue has been resolved to your satisfaction. A Customer Satisfaction Survey will be emailed to you very shortly. Please take time to provide us with your feedback about this support experience, as it will help us in our on-going effort to continually improve our services.

Well Syd Looks like apart from other issues your website does not work. )) 1. The updater does not work at all with FileZ installed. It reaches the point with the Palm One Logo with the Green button blinking and then when the script customiser launches, it gives a "General Error" and stops. Only way is to delete the FileZ application. Rerun the installer again and proceed with the update. You may want to check this and put it in your FAQ online.

A friend of mine, who shall remain anon, who is a developer at Handspring, saw the error and re-wrote the code for me in less than 5 minutes and solved the problem. Unfortunately, my Treo had a hardware failure and P1 has replaced it and therefore the fix my friend made was lost. I wonder why after reporting this error on many occasions to Handspring, this has not been fixed in the 1.02 patch. BTW, are you at Sykes on Airport Road ? Regards Devesh R. A quick (and perhaps dirty) fix is - Install aDSTkeeper. You should find it somewhere on Treocental. It is free. What is more it fixes this problem once you use it to set your location AND prevents citytime from over writing and currupting the time/date record even if you use it later. It does not fix the basic citytime bug but some how it seems to fix the problem

Thanks for the tip. Will check it out. However, there is one feature of citytime that I do use frequently (since I travel between US, India, Singapore, Thailand), change location, so that the clock changes to the correct time zone and I can still see the various cities I have set up around the world. I will check aDSTkeeper and try and give you a feedback.

What I am raving and ranting about is the fact that Palm is shipping out buggy versions of the Treo WHICH THEY KNOW ABOUT, and are doing nothing to fix it.

Also, the standard defense for Palm has become "have you installed any third-party" applications. I cannot think of ANYONE who does not use at least ONE third-party application on their Palm. If Palm is so concerned, why do they not institute a testing setup where Palm applications are certified ? Something along the lines of a WHQL certification that Microsoft has begun for device drivers ?

    Regards
