Is there a way to show all the apps that are currently working in the background without checking each one individually, a la Task Manager in Windows?

No. There are a growing number that do work in the background. Chatter, Verichat, Octopus (or whatever) are examples. Ben

Any program that has an Enable or Disable option is working in the background

I'm aware of the enable/disable feature in some apps. What I'm looking for is someway to know when a few of those apps are running in the background.

As one example, I'm playing with Lightwav. Whenever I get a call, it leaves PTunes running, but I can't tell it's running without actually opening PTunes.

Since OS5 can't technically multi-task, how can some apps work in the background at all? Are developers just programming around the limitations?

I don't know if "Task Manager for Palm" is what you're insinuating here, but aside from the name, that app is nothing like Task Manager in Windows. It's pure garbage IMO.
