It was suggested that I add shoutcast links on www.treobits.com for those who have PTunes deluxe.

I've added a couple of links for testing, but I don't know if they work as I don't have the deluxe version of PTunes. I need someone to test this out and let me know if it works.

Once I get it to work, I'll take requests as to what feeds you want listed.

    Thanks

I click on the Shoutcast beta link and then click on the PLAY button and get message that "The file type you are attempting to download is not supported on your device". I already have PTunes Deluxe installed.

I couldn't get it to work for me. says "file attempting to download not supported"

Maybe I am doing something wrong though.

First link works, but it's a 128k stream! Not going to work reliably, even on CDMA Sprint!

Choose some links that are 64k or less. There's one at www.radioparadise.com that I'd recommend. This seems to be the magic number to reliably stream on Sprint. Dunno about GSM.

Once you click on the link, you should get a "Download this file?" window. If you click yes, and the download completes, you should see the Beam/transfer window come up. In order to use the link with PTunes Deluxe, choose to SAVE the file if you want to keep using Blazer.

My T600 does something a little strange when I use the OPEN button to start a shoutcast link - it kicks me to the Palm chooser (what-do-you-call-it? the main palm screen with all the icons of programs.) and starts PTunes running in the background. However, the Shoutcast start up once it's done buffering. I can go back to Blazer, or open up PTunes without any problem.

Anyway, I love the idea of a Treo-specific Shoutcast page. Looks great! Keep the links coming!

They download fine; however, I agree that 128kbs is way high - I always actually stick to 24kbs...after that it's inconsistent.

Okay...the first couple of links I had on the site were higher bit streams than the treo can effectively use, though you still should have been able to get it to work. I added one link in a lower bit stream and it appears to work good now. Also, I noticed that after you download and open the file, you need to open PTunes to play the listing.

If it doesn't work for some users, the only thing I can think could cause the problem would be the service provider restrictions. I use sprint.

you get ptunes for free with a treo but it doesn't play shoutcast streams. are you sure you have ptunes deluxe installed?

    GRSMITH,

Just tested shoutcast with P-Tunes deluxe. It does connect & play fine. The only thing (and this is not your fault) is I kept getting "buffering" thus preventing me from playing music without interruption. The connection works great though. Now you can add some more shoutcast options.

    Great Job!

We looked into putting links to shoutcast streams on Treo 600 Essentials but found there were some problems regarding this...

    1. The links change too frequently to keep up with
    2. It's really just a duplication of effort because the shoutcast page has an interface that allows people to only see low bitrate streams already
    3. There's no available XML, RSS, or PHP script or server feed that I am aware of.
    4. Republishing the server listing info is a violation of the Shoutcast TOS agreement and is punishible by death.
    5. Only a very small portion of treo users have the ability to do this because they need Ptunes deluxe and pretty much an unlimited data plan (basically Sprint) - GSM users pay too much for data to make this a reality for them.

In the end, we made the decision to let people just go to http://www.shoutcast.com/directory/?maxbitrate=56 to see an up to date list of available streams.

That page displays all streams under 56k, is only about 75k in size and displays nice enough on Blazer.

    Bookmark it!

P.S. I have been toying with the idea of just creating a frameset with the Treo 600 Essentials header on top and the shoutcast low bitrate stream page on the bottom for this type of feature. If I get enough interest (send a message to us) I'll make a separate page. This way, users can stay in our portal while browsing streams.

off-hand, do you know how to encode a shoutcast query for both a genre and particular bit-rate?

belay that request - it was self-evident in the url. just add "sgenre=<blah>" to it.

grsmith, this is great! The more low bit-rate shoutcast links the better!

Now all we need library of decent low rez skins for zlauncher that work on the Treo! *hint*

With the exception of using T-Mobile on an unlocked Cingular.....costs $19/month.
