Here's an odd one- when I am receiving calls on my new T600 via T-Mobile,I bought an unlocked Cingular that has mostly been working fine on T-Mobile (some data issues I'm still working the kinks out of) but this is too much: there is a shrill screech that happens for a second or two before I can hear the caller- very unnerving. Anybody got that?

HS is sending me a new one but, oddly enough, for the echoing speakerphone problem not this one; when the person on the other end of the call hears a hard-core echo of themselves.

But I will say this- problems aside, this is by far the best handeld I've had (and I've had a few).

I have experienced exactly the same problem. Two or three seconds of shrill screeching like a very sick fax machine, right? Then the noise stops, and the call begins. For me the problem is intermittent (it's happened three times so far).

I've also had two incoming calls ring once, then divert to voicemail before I could answer.

I have a rev. B Cingular phone with my T-Mobile SIM card.

I guess it's time to get a replacement.

Same thing for me too, though it's only happened a couple of times.

I'm also CNGLR phone, T-Mobile service, and get a 1-2 second screech about once per week. Mostly it happens with speakerphone or headset - I haven't experience it with regular phone. Sick fax is it exactly.

I've also experienced the screeching noise when making/send call it last for a few seconds but is very loud when you're not using the headset. Also using Cingular Treo 600 on T-Mobile's network. Does it sound like a trouble report is in order since a few of us have experienced the problem? T-Mobile should be able to look into this problem since it is only occurring when phone calls, right?

Never filed a trouble report but it sounds like a good thing to do. Will they just say they won't support this issue since we didn't get a T-Mobile branded phone? It clearly could be a conflict between our Cingular 600's and the T-Mobile network since we all seem to have been clever enough to get ours that way. Are we all in NYC by the way? But is this the price we pay for being clever? I'll post when I get my replacement and let you know.

I'm in California. I talked to a T-Mobile representative last night that stressed that although the T-Mobile branded Treo 600 is not being sold yet, they are still supporting the Treo 600 handsets and have been so since they made announcement about a month ago. I'll give T-Mobile a call while on the road today and will mention that 5 people so far have experienced this problem.

It would be helpful if those that have experienced this problem could also call in a trouble report to T-Mobile to get some ammunition on our side and so that they don't dismiss this as an isolated incident. Just my .02 cents.

I also get this problem on my "unbranded" Treo 600 using T-Mobile. It happens probably 1 time for every 30 calls I make (usually when calling VoiceMail). Please share any solution to this problem. Maybe I will just wait & exchange via HS for the T-Mobile version (if it's ever released) based on this....

    same problem here

    super annoying

I have the same problem about once a week on my Cingular GSM phone WITH CINGULAR SERVICE. So it's sounding like a device issue, not carrier issue.

So far I've only experienced it just using as a regular handset, without headset or speakerphone on. So I suspect that part doesn't matter.

Has anyone reported this to Handspring? With what response?

    Thanx

Ditto! It has happened about 3-4 times to me. I am in Michigan. It is intermittent.

I called HS this morning. They want me to do a battery disconnect reset. I doubt this will help but will try it tonight and report back.

I have the same screeching problem too.

Rev B on Cingular service in NYC.

ps: you all that are using Cingular phones on T-Mobile, what are you doing about the cancellation fee on the Cingular plan you had to sign up for to get the phone? Keeping it as backup, or absorbing the $150 cancellation fee?

Have had the screeching problem once so far. Also have had the phone ring once then instantly send the call to voicemail while on an active call. Very strange...

    Location: NY Metro area
    Carrier: T-Mobile

    Model: Cingular Branded
    -Firmware: 02.02
    -Software: 1.06-CNG
    -Hardware: B

I've had that shrill with my Sprint Treo 600 in the mall when there is poor reception...a couple of high pitch screams here and there when the radio is trying to change frequencies. Nasty, and I do not remember the Treo 300 doing that.

But I do remember the Treo 300 running out of battery...

That might make sense, that we are hearing some sort of weird feedback as it tries to find signal. I'll track the conditions better when it happens, though I am hoping it won't now that i have the replacement. Is it possible that the echo on the speaker-phone problem is in any way connected to the screeching? That is why HS gave me the replacement and it does seem to be working better on this one- haven't tried it that much yet.

I will say this- HS should be careful on this matter because the level at which this noise happens is so loud I believe it could actually damage my ear. I have had to hold the phone an arms length away- people across the room could hear it. That is a lot of sound being generated at a pitch that could do some harm.

The odd thing is that the person on the other end of the call apparently hears nothing at all. Just whatever sounds the mic is picking up. Weird, huh?

I have the new one up and running after a few glitches (what's up w/Vindigo- what a pain!) and will post once I've gotten a few calls, etc.

I didn't sign up for the Cingular plan, per se. I did the Handspring upgrade using T-Mobile SIM card in Cingular phone...no cancellation fees involved. Just hoping that the T-Mobile branded phone comes out within next two weeks.

BTW, when I called T-Mobile about voicemail issue they said they'd something on the back-end(?) to fix the problem, tech didn't say what was causing the problem. It's kind of hard to monitor because I haven't made a lot of calls using the speaker phone yet.
