NOTE: This was done on a Sprint Treo600. I'm sure it's very similar on the other versions, but I don't have one so I can't say for sure.

Here you go. I was going to just post the .prc files but I don't know if there is any personal info in the code anywhere, so I'm passing out the images.

If someone wants to host these or offer them in a ZIP file, that's cool with me.

Quick disclaimer: I assume no responsibility for anyone's use of these files or instruction (be careful and backup your files).

Basically, first you need to follow the instructions on http://www.jakepratt.com/ to use Filez and PRCedit to get access to your files.

Open your Phone.prc file in PRCedit.

    Open the bitmaps dropdown menu.

Edit the following bitmaps, replacing them with the linked images. To do this, you need to do a copy/paste, which you can either do from a paint program or probably your web browser window. The images are named according to the number and name in the prc.

IMPORTANT: by default, these graphics appear in the "8-bit" column. We need these graphics in the "16-bit" column to look right. Check the 16-bit column, and use the same width and height settings as in the 8 bit column. Edit the 16 bit and paste (CRTL-V) the correct image in the empty window, saving all changes. Uncheck the 8-Bit box. It will give you a warning message about losing the 8-bit but it's cool.

Do this for all the images and for the one in Phone_SPCS.prc.

ALSO IMPORTANT! : Make sure to UNCHECK the Copy Protect and Read Only boxes before saving. If you don't, you will need to hard-reset.

    In Phone.prc:

    1302
    1303
    1304
    1305
    1306
    1307
    1308
    1309
    1310
    1311
    1312
    1350
    1352

(1301 in the Phone.prc is for the other model phones with the reel on the 1. You could use the 1301 file here, or edit your own with the reel).

    In Phone_SPCS.prc:
    1301

I looked tha pone.prc too and saw those images - I'd be glad to start hacking away but you know what's stopping me?

It's stupid but, PRCedit doesn't seem to allow me to copy a bitmap from the view/edit bitmap window and paste it into Photoshop.

Anyone know of a better PRC editor that allows this? I could fly through some phone pad hacks if copy/past simply worked.

Why don't you do a print screen once you've opened the bitmap in PRCedit and paste it into Photoshop. Then you can just crop out the 160 X 160 area that represents the dial pad bitmap.

There's another way. Just do a printscreen and that will copy into your clipboard. You can then setup a new image in photoshop that is the same dimensions as the images in phone.prc and paste it into there.

The problem I am having is rewriting the file back to the Treo. With Phone_SPSC.prc, the file was read-only, but not copy-protected. Phone.prc is copy-protected, and it looks like that is stopping the update. I tried to unselect copy-protected in Filez on the Treo, but it said I couldn't because it was a ROM based file. I did the same in PRCedit, and the box unchecks, but doesn't seem to overwrite the file on the phone.

oops on the repeat of printscreen.....I was still typing

I also noticed that there are a few bitmaps with the phone button images. I've changed 3 so far, but no luck.

I should have mentioned that I tried printscreen but I get the whole app screen instead of just the edit screen which is kind of a PITA when you're having to crop everything and position images exactly, etc.

Still looking for a better solution.

Somethings up with Phone.prc because if you look at image 1301, you see the image for the 1 that is placed on the 1 button, but it has the reel icon next to it and not the envelope icon like on the Sprint Phone. Also, take a look at 1350 and 1352...more button graphics, different resolution. It's like they squeezed all the images for all the phones in there, and maybe it's only looking for a few of them. Might be editing the wrong images.

Also, in PRCedit, originally I though Trans. stood for Transparency as in Alpha, but I think it relates to the actual color used for transparency. Is that correct?

BINGO! 1350 and 1352 are the button files that are used. I just changed my buttons to brushed aluminum ones.

OK - Once we work all of this out I'll start another graphics subsection for phone dialpad skins over at treo600essentials.

Sweet. This is gonna get cool, the entire phone is gonna be custom. I think some Aqua OS X buttons are in need here...do you have a base of that gel from your link?

So did you keep the transparent pink or did you replace it?

I just did the Aqua ones too, it looks really good.

Screenshots.....Not sure how because I can't take a picture of my phone with my phone and I don't have anything else. I could make a mock up in photoshop if you want to see what it looks like.

Basically, the buttons are in two layers....bottom layer is the button itself, and the top layer is the numbers and letters.

For the bottom layer, you can use the eyedropper tool in Photoshop if you want to use transparency. Just use the same color and don't change the transparency setting in PRCedit and it will work. I just used white as the background and that works fine too. I am going to work on the numbers and letters now, using a cooler font. The number letter layer also uses the pink transparency.

Now that we're finding out all these images can be changed rather easily, I think the next step is somebody creating a program to manage them all. That would be so sweet! We could have "themes"... logos, wallpaper, dialpad... and imagine if any average joe with no technical knowledge could implement them easily by just clicking some settings? WOW the possibilities. I'm sure many people would buy something like that

Hopefully it's not just wishful thinking! Almost makes me wish I was a programmer and not a designer

I admire your ingenuity. Hack away!!!! Anxious to see what kind of dial pad skins you come up with
My Treo: I think I'll keep her. All dressed up for prom and her date Foleo stood her up

Here is what the replacement I am working on looks like....

I already have the buttons in place, now I am just working on importing the new fonts.

Oops you did the Aqua too! (but a bit different)

In addition, the 1200 series will allow you to edit the "Favorites" buttons.
