i am trying to add a good imap program to my tro 600 which one is best all around.

    thank you

Ditto, I have to quit kidding myself in thinking that Snappermail will ever add IMAP. It's time to find a replacement email application. What does everyone think works best with the 600?

I tried Iambic mail and it was pretty good. The thing that I did not like about it was that you had to pull out the stylus way too much. If they could optimize the application for the Treo's 5 Way nav so that I could do everything without the stylus, then I would consider dumping the free HS app.

Has anyone tried VersaMail? I've never tried it myself because:

    1) it requires OS 4 and I have a Treo 270 (I ordered T600 Nov 10 - still waiting <g>), and

    2) there is no trial version for it (but I will probably spring for it once I have the T600 just to "test" it).

The reason I even mention it, in light of 2) above, is that it is the successor to MultiMail, and although old and outdated, MM has the best "IMAP" compliance of any mail product I've used. It does AUTOMATIC lookup of addresses (i.e., just start typing in the TO box and the address pops right in). It syncs flawless back and forth between the master and remote - so you never have to mark read or delete an email twice, etc. If MM could do automatic interval polling to the mailbox, I'd probably deal with it's blemishes and just keep using it!

Palm simply will not let a VersaMail demo out though, and as a fairly persuasive email consultant I've tried my hardest <g>. But given the disappointments I've had with every other IMAP client I've tried (some are very close, but not quite there) I will probably plunk down the $30 to see if it really is MultiMail reincarnated.

My "must have" features for IMAP are:

    1) Multiple IMAP folders
    2) Customizable "sent folder" for placing IMAP messages into the master
    3) Full two-way sync (i.e., delete it here, delete it there)
    4) Flexible sync options (MM lets you "check" any or all of these options for every sync - get new mail, sync from master, sync from remote, send waiting mail) - without the "check" only option it often takes too long to just look for new mail as the stewardess is closing the airplane door and telling all of the cell phone folks to shut down <g>.

so far MM seems to be the only one that consistentky does 3) above, and very few have 1 & 2 above. I've not seen any others except MM that do 4 above either.

Now - Basejet is getting very close - however there are a few "missing message" issues that they are working on, so until those are truly fixed, I just "test" Basejet, but am still using MM for day to day use.

I have tried all of the mail programs mentioned here, and each has its plusses and minus's but, the only one I can consistantly get to work is Versamail, however it will not autofetch with Treo600.

Well, that is a disappointment, because just about the only thing MultiMail can't do that I would LIKE is auto-fetch. MM does have a few other quirks - like getting totally wigged out if you lose a connection while it's trying to connect to the mail server, oftentimes requiring a soft reset on the Treo 270 (used to require a HARD reset on my Kyocera 6035, so the Treo was a big improvement <g>), so I'll probably buy VersaMail, but it sounds like it won't do the one thing I was hoping it would <sigh>.

Don't give up yet! I have heard from at least one person that they got it to autofetch! I still think is a conflict with something , software etc, but I can not get it to fetch, it tries, but nothing...I did try it first after a hard reset and it still hung up!
GSM Mail works perfect, too bad that is cant do IMAP...

Yeah - AND it's amazing too how many products "do IMAP" but really only emulate POP functionality through the IMAP calls. Well, I'm hoping that the T600 will be here by Monday (didn't get a shipping notice yesterday, so I'm not holding my breath that it will arrive tomorrow.

One problem is that IMAP is slow and painful even on devices like the T600. A true IMAP client that stayed connected would probably be an awful data and battery pig.

For Chatter, I decided to add base IMAP functionality for the purpose of being able to 1) get new mail pushed to the Treo, and 2) read and reply to emails quickly. Until we get better battery life and faster data rates, I doubt there will be a "perfect" client.

Well, I don't want "connected" IMAP - but even in disconnected mode there is a lot that can be accomplished that is typically not.

Probably the most important functionality of IMAP should be complete sync of whatever it is you "want" synched. I only choose to sync "mailbox" and try to keep it lean. However, I do want to only delete once in either direction, and I do want messages sent from the remote device to somehow end up back in the master.

Honestly had I never used MultiMail (and I've been using it for many years), I would have assumed that I was truly asking for too much. However, I know that what I want is available, and feasible. I'm getting the impression that VersaMail will live up to those expections, but I can tell you that knowing how differently IMAP is implemented in various programs, Palm refusing to release a demo and just saying "it's all listed in the user guide so you can see what it does" has never impressed me <g>.

I've not tried Chatter (jumped on the Verichat bandwagon early and got a "lifetime" service license). But I hear good things about it.

I've been running VersaMail 2.5.1 since I got my Treo 600. It has auto-downloaded my email every 1/2 hours since I got my Treo600. Those saying that Multi-Mail/ VersaMail does not automatically download email (including IMAP) automatically have not tried the program.

MultiMail Pro does not have a "polling" feature. I've been using MultiMail since my first Palm II, and have the last released version of MultiMail Pro (3.1) that was released in 1999. There was some "MultiMail Light" version that shipped with a number of Palm devices, and it's possible that it was updated to poll.

I'm just looking forward to VersaMail on my T600 then <g>! I love MultiMail Pro (except for it's odd little quirks), and if VersaMail is close to the same functionality, updated for the modern world, then I'll be quite happy.

Like I said in my previous post, yes some people have gotten Versamail to autofetch, I have not. I have spent alot of time trying, it does try to but times out. If you have any secrets please share, I am using a 600 on Sprint.

Staying connected does not require any data to be transferred with IMAP. IMAP can be much faster than POP when properly implemented (although no Palm IMAP client yet implements IMAP properly - although Versamail is not bad).

I can confirm that I am also unable to get Versamail 2.5.1 to auto get my mail. It tries to do the fetch at the proper time but ends up beeping 2-3 times and I get a message that says "Scheduled get failed". The full message is:

The last scheduled get failed. You may wish to perform a manual get at your convenience. Timeout Reading, cmd 73.

Looks like those who have it working are lucky. Would be nice to figure out the problem. Also would be nice to have better 5-way nav support.

Thanks, that is exactly what I get when it tries to autofetch!
Maybe if we keep this thread going we can get some help...

Oh sweet! Just got the Treo a few hours ago - did a quick pass with VersaMai 2.5 - it is about 10 times (maybe more!) faster than it's predecessor MultiMail - haven't had a change to learn all of the quirks yet - but I think this is going to be what I've been looking for.

GSM Treo, no autofetch for versmail 2.5.1. does the same error sequence mentioned above.

It seems to work if I've got the screen already on, but doesn't work if the screen is off. (kinda makes fetching in the background rather silly)

I'm not sure what the issue is actually. One day I had about 4 "failures" to auto-fetch, but since then none. I see the screen light up sitting on the dresser if it's auto-fetching while it's off. So I know it works - just don't have any great insight for those it's not working for.
