I think the resizing must be done on your desktop with a photo editor.

I only have two possible settings in Camera Prefs: large & small.

Thanks. And remember: it's not porn, it's art.

It's been said before that the Treo 600 camera creates an Impressionistic work of art with each photo. But if you install Handspring's utility, "PowerTools for Treo 600" you can access the submenus of the camera and turn off the "Impressionism" digital effects. The person that posted the original photos in this thread used PowerTools + the new CCD Emu beta that provides software emulation of a CCD, in addition to spectral interpolation algorithms originally developed for NASA*.

    Unbelievable.

Ok, so... has anyone been able to actually download these? If so, can you share them with the rest of us? Or working links?

I've tried resizing the pictures on XP, and they look identical to the 640.480 pics only smaller. I've seen good cameras, and this is by no stretch of the imagination a good camera. If I take a 640/480 shot from my Nikon it beats this thing hands down. I don't even remotely expect it to match a Nikon, but if your going to put a camera on the phone then make sure it can take a decent picture. That's all I ask. Decent to me, is not a blurry background, or the edges of the subject being blurred due to compression or what ever else causes these things with this camera. Here are my results from an airplane Sunday over NY City.

does anyone have these files to share? I would not mind getting my hands on them, and I cannot find them at Handspring's site.

If you had a small but powerful penlight attached to your keychain, would it work as a "flash" in low light situations? This could make taking a picture even in the dark a possibility. There are some pretty powerful tiny flashlights that fit on a keychain, I'm gonna test one out and see how it does...

Sadly, you're right. I glad I didn't embarrass myself any further by emailing Handspring Support.

That is too bad. Guess I will keep hoping for some way to improve the indoor shots with this cam.
    yep.

Ok, I have the perfect example of the camera adjusting the white balance or what ever it does... The link below is a series of shots taking in about 2 minutes. The difference is amusing to say the least.

I took a series of pics of my cat in my living room in an attempt to get 1 good pic. As you will notice I was not able to get a single good shot. The room these were taking in is roughly 15ft by 20 foot. I have a ceiling fan with 4 60 or 75 watt bulbs about 4 or 5 feet away from him, and a corner light about 3 feet in the opposite direction with 2 60 or 75 watt bulbs. Clearly not poor lighting!

There are 15 pictures, so on slow connections it will take a while to load.

My rant... I LOVE THIS PHONE, I HATE THIS CAMERA! It is a worthless POS for pretty much anything other than mild amusement. Even then it fails miserably unless you are able to attain those "Optimal" Conditions for taking a picture. I know... I just need to install Fluorescent lighting everywhere I may want to take a picture. Or get my cat to be cute outside so I can capture the moment!

VAN GOGH. It was VAN GOGH, not PICASSO.

Come on, man, we might have been born at night, but not last night!

How'd you get your cat to NOT MOVE for 2 minutes? The pose is the same in all the pics. You gotta change your business to a Cat Obedience School.

Hahaha, If you look real close you can tell he was moving a little. He just loves lying on his back like that.

    No Photoshop tricks here...

I think you nay-sayers are missing the point with the camera in this phone. Of course it's not going to be the camera you use on your vacations or for important occasions. You'd use a real camera for that. The problem is, most of us don't tote a real camera around everywhere, every-day. I've already come across dozens of situations where I wanted to take a picture to capture the moment, but didn't have my good digital camera around. For those "gotta capture them" moments, my Treo worked just fine. Yes it has lighting limitations, but you just have to know that and work with it accordingly. If I'm wandering around NYC and happen to see Britney Spears walking by, I'd much rather have a crappy Treo600 picture than no picture at all. I don't normally have my camera on me, but I always carry my phone. Complain all you want about the quality, but the fact that the camera is there at all times really kicks ***!

I saw John Lithgow on the N train but he was sitting some distance away and I think he was very aware that people were noticing him even though he was jotting something on his pda.

Recently, I saw Al Franken while walking up 7th Avenue near the Hilton on 53rd, but he was on his cell phone and walking fast.

But, speaking of the Hiltons, I did run into Paris...

Nice treatment. Coincidentally, I was researching Stieglitz' concept of "Equivalents" for something I'm writing about Phonecams, and how they can enable your personal photography. He did a cloud series, and I recall seeing one in an exhibit and it was a pretty small B&W print.

    Here's a good historical account:

And you can derive much inspiration by looking at the work of people like Minor White, Stieglitz, Steichen, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Eugene Atget and Diane Arbus for some really scary stuff.

A lot of you are forgetting how fricking powerful this whole combination is, when looked at as a package.

The camera's not the best, but it's a lot of fun if you have even a rudimentary knowledge of photography and lighting.

I'm working on a mobile blog type thing (similar to the quasi-commercial system linked to in earlier posts). But this one is my own personal one. And I've specifically formatted it so that I can post to it and read it clearly from my phone.

And I upload my images via FTP (from the 600), instead of e-mailing them.

It's still a work-in-progress, but fully-functional, and surely you can see the potential.

    http://www.trip23.com/mobileshots/

People who are knocking the 600's camera so hard have priorities I just don't understand. The improvement from the 300 to the 600 is phenomenal. Imagine what the 800 will be like! Be a squeaky wheel, but lighten up a little . Ulcer alert!
