So, we see Handsprings manuever last night, to pseudo roll out a GSM Cingular Treo 600, if only to dangle the carrot for a moment, and to later state shipping won't happen for about two weeks. Then they add a demand overload disclaimer to even further blur the true shipping date. So the final question is, will those anticipated shipments to distributors who already have hundreds of backorders with an expected arrival date of 11/3 still be true? These are unlocked units of course, so it would satisfy some of us T-Mobile users, even if it means paying a little extra. Maybe Larry from Dream Pages can make a call to see if the 11/3 date is going to stick for these.

It would be nice if the phones on the Handspring Promo page were unlocked!

    A couple of points....

That's a great line - pseudo roll out.

Pre-order does not = available. Unless you parse the words and argue over what the word "is" means.....

My sense? I believe they did what they did for two reasons:

    (1) They told investors GSM units would be "available" on their website by the end of October. Perhaps they didn't want to hurt their merger with an announcement that their signature product was stalled.

    (2) To take pressure off of them from the constant calls from GSM customers.

From my discussions with HS CSRs, it's clear that they are NOT selling unlocked units on their site. Only Cingular optimized, meaning they come loaded with Cingular specific software and bear a Cingular brand.

That doesn't mean that they haven't released product to the general retail channel. No one had info on that, other than to say, that the fact that product may be in the hands of Ingram doesn't mean that it is authorized for trans-shipment to retail outlets.
