Does anyone know how much of the Treo 600's FlashROM is left unused?

Also, does Brayder's latest beta of JackFlash (works with PalmOS 5 devices) work with the Treo 600?

I emailed Brayder, and they said they should have it ready soon.

Th free flash available depends on which ROM version of the Treo you have.

I expect we can remove the following non-English languages in the UK Orange Treo:
    German, French,Italian.

    So we can remove

In short, removing French, German and Italian will give 2.2MB

Removing Orange Tips will be 105kb

Removing non-essential utilities might give 500kb.

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to check when I had access to a Treo 600 earlier this month - it comes with 8 MB RAM, does it not?

Did they give you a specific date, or was it the standard "coming real soon now" line?

Actually, I was referring to Flash memory - not the regular RAM. I thought the Treo 600 was designed with 8 MB Flash memory, but I may be wrong.

This the email thread from my correspondence with Brayder Tech:

Query: Hi, I am a registered user of JackFlash. Any plans for Treo 600 support?

Brayder: Unfortunately, HandSpring/PalmOne have built the Treo 600 to very tight specs and there is no available Flash for our products to manage.

Query: I understand. However, I would still like the ability to manipulate the files that are stored in ROM. There's some junk in there that I would like to remove to free up space.

Brayder: Brayder Technologies does not have a solution for what you want to do. I could guess that if the next version of the Treo 600 was different and had available Flash, then we could support it.

So I guess no flash then...

I think it has FlashRAM, but the problem is using it. As owners of the HandEra 330 know, you need a certain amount of FlashRAM to be able to even install FlashRAM utilities. And if the Treo 600 uses compressed files on its FlashRAM, that adds a layer of complexity that Brayder probably wants to avoid. (e.g. If a tweaked version of JackFlash crashed while moving files around, the phone could be rendered useless. Can you say lawsuit?) I don't expect to ever see a Brayder utility released for the Treo 600 if the files on its FlashRAM are really compressed. It's a shame Handspring didn't just put a normal-sized FlashRAM chip in there and let advanced users use the space however they want.

    Thanks for nothing, Handspring.

OK, so how did you view those files, Cyril? Isn't the ROM compressed? Or were you just running an emulator?

There are a lot of utilities such as FileZ, that will allow you to view ROM files.

I wonder how the file management utilities are able to read the proper size of compressed ROM files, though. Can anyone try out a few other file managers and post what files + file sizes are reported?
