I know it's not working yet but this shouldn't be happening.

    Start a new SMS message.
    Click on To:
    Choose Select from Contacts
    Select a contact
    The Tero preforms a Reset...

Can anyone else confirm this bug?

Another related question. Were there firmware upgrades for the 300s. In other words can they fix stuff like this if they find it?

Mine doesn't crash... it goes back to the sms screen. Most of the reset bugs seem to be caused if you previously had a T300 and synched your T600 with the same info from your palm desktop. I backed up my contacts and todo's and all that, then I deleted palm desktop and anything elsw that remained and completely reinstalled everything. I have never seen a reset bug or any error as of yet on my T600. I've tried all the scenarios that I've read about and none of them have caused a reset.

Question: exactly how are your phone numbers entered into your phonebook?
  4. #4
I get a crash too. My suggestion for sending SMS messages from your contacts list is to stay within the phone application. When you go down to a number that is on a mobile, a box will appear at the bottom saying message. From here, it should work fine.

I didn't have a 300 so this is a new Treo. Doesn't crash if you type in the contact info only if you select it from the list.

xxx-xxx-xxxx when I highlight one from the phone directory I can indeed send a message that way...

No resets here when I try to duplicate from other members. I also advocate a 'clean install' when upgrading to a different OS in any platform. I just synced my PIM data and installed third party apps one at time while testing everything on my 600. So far no problems.

HUH? you say it crashes when you select it from list, and now you highlight one from the phone directory and you can indeed send a message that way?

But this is not an upgrade. This is my first Palm device. The only other sfotware I've installed is Snapper Mail demo and one of the free games that was on the Palm Desktop CD that came with the phone.

So how would I go about resetting it back to factory to try again?

If I use the SMS app and try to select it resets.

If I go to my contacts and highlight a mobile # it put it in the To field and allows me to type away. I haven't tried to send it yet but I do get further.

So I tried both - no reset. original factory settings would be to do a hard reset and experiment with what you're trying to do. You said you only have Snappermail and the factory games installed?

I have been using this repeatedly with no problems. I use Microsoft Outlook for my contacts and my addresses were imported from there. I don't know if that makes a difference.

I use Outlook too. No resets whatsoever.

OK (remember I'm a PocketPC convert so bear with me).

So I've preformed the hard reset. I now try to sync to get my contacts back but all the old software get reinstalled. Where are the settings in the Palm Desktop to prevent the software from being reinstalled (and only the contacts).

I thought it was in Hot Sync > Custom and setting the 4 items from Install to System to "Do nothing". However it still backsuop the DB for the apps.

    Thanks

Well it's not just SMS. It's anytime I select a contact from the list. Just tried to share a photo and it reset as well.

I can't belive anyone doesn't know how to prevent the old apps from being installed so I can track down the offending program. I sure would apprecite a bit of help.

    Thanks.

OK anything to help a new member. I might have missed it but do you use Outlook as your PIM or Palm Desktop?

Your contacts database index needs to be regenerated. Think about it - you are asking the Treo to do a lookup when it crashes. It is looking up a contact.

The problem seems to be that older Address Book applications and enhancers sometimes hijack the sort order of the addresses/contacts. This is often done in apps like ActionNames/Agendus to sort by company.

Here's how to reset the contacts index.

Go to Phone and then the Contacts view
    Select Options | Preferences
You will see a Sort by box with two options.
Select whatever option is not currently selected and hit OK.
    This resorts the contacts.
No go back to the same dialog and set it to the order you want and hit OK.

Your contacts database will be ordered correctly now and should no longer cause a crash.

If you do need to sort by company, I suggest using TakePhone which uses its own method of indexing rather than messing with the built in one. Most of the old address book applications predate smart smartphones that really need this sorting order to be left alone for lookup functions.
