Atop Mauna Kea looking at the Keck twin observatories, with Haleakala on Maui far in the distance. At 14,000 feet with 1/2 the oxygen there is at sea level, I could barely keep what I was doing straight, between trying to take pictures with an APS, Digital, and Treo cameras.

You guys all have some great pics. When I first purchased my Treo 600 a little over a week ago I thought that the camera was worthless. After seeing all of your pictures I realize just how wrong I was. I realize that the pictures will never be spectacular, but your pics give me hope that mine will soon look that good.

Just need a little practice and a lot of light!!

I will be posting some pics soon.

ToolkiT, I think you need a lesson in the art of sarcasm. The Danger Hiptop/Sidekick's camera is one of the few cameraphones with worse picture quality than the Treo 600's, so I'm pretty sure he was joking.

    Ah, pardon my ignorance...

The tone of the post and the post count of 1 made me believe we had yet another troll...

Next time when people make sarcastic jokes, it helps if they use smilies.. thats why they are there, to clarify the non-verbal communication...

Thanks for the heads up... warning retracted..

p.s. I know the art of sarcasm and I find the joke quite funny now I get it

First pics with my Treo 600...

I must admit. This is not a great camera. However, I did not purchase the phone because of it. Today was the first time I even tried to use it in the week that I've had the phone. But, now that I know how useful the camera can be, when I get together with family and friends and I have one of those stories that always start with, "You wont believe this **it!", I can add to it, "but I have proof thanks to my Treo 600."

Don't know about yours, but when I turn on the camera, the image of a dark scene will brighten at first, usually with a color shift, then the white balance comes back in line after a few seconds.

Under flourescent light, there is normally a greenish/bluish tint that our brain filters out, but often shows up in film and digital pictures that do not use any color correction (including first few seconds of viewing Treo 600 pics before capture).

Other indoor pics can have a yellow/orange cast from tungsten incandescent lighting (which I have also seen on Treo 600).

The initial default white balance for the treo 600 camera may be set (liket most digital cameras and consumer film) for daylight, not incandescent (tungsten) or flourescent lighting, hence color shift indoors.

But I've seen some great 640*480 images from other cameras... i'm surprised these are as bad as they are.

I've heard rumors of ROM upgrades coming for the camera firmware. It's entirely possible this can fix problems. Digital camera sensors do not respond evenly to all colors, so non-linear processing of sensor capture information is usually applied before compression into JPG format. If the algorithms for processing the images are inappropriate, it can make ugly pictures that a software fix can improve.

That's why high-end digital cameras offer a RAW image format as well as JPG... so professional photographers can use image processing utilities on the raw sensor data, in addition to the already processed & compressed JPG files.

    1) Need to compensate for that bluish tint I see in almost every background.
    2) Set the camera to delay the capture of an image to make sure the "blue dots" disappear even in the hands of a first-timer.

    Btw, those pictures are GREAT!
