    Christmas IS early

    no, christmas isn't early.

Your phone is already a week late and it is, after all, only a phone. It wont make you breakfast in the morning and it wont drive you home from the pub!

    where's mine got to?

two tin cans on a length of string

why does glob-mob get away with charging a fotune and holding your tariff hostage for 6 months? when the likes of directmobilephones.com and smalltalk.co.uk had plenty in stock today and sent them out today for 20 quid - not to mention only holding your tariff hostage for 4 months

Orange will initiate a "clawback" (charge) against the retailer if the customer changes tariff within 90 / 120 days from connection (depends on each retailer's contract with the network). Some companies are so fearful of customers changing down a few days/weeks too early that they impose extended periods, like the 6 months you mentioned. This is because it can be quite hard to charge the customer in the event that they do change tariff (legally that is), it is easier to just impose a stupidly long "sentence" and hope they dont break it.

T-mobile now have a 6 month "no tariff change" policy for new connections with all retailers, for the sake of administration, (and confusion for the customer) some companies will make this one rule apply to all network connections.

The Canary Wharf (London, docklands) Orange shop have received their promotional material and are expecting their stock of phones later in the week.

They already have a non-working dummy which felt very comfortable and solid. A much better fit in the hand than the 180/270.

They were also able to give me prices. The cheapest they would do a phone for a new connection was on the 50 quid a month tariff and then they still want 160 quid! I pointed out I could get it a lot cheaper (er, like FREE) on that tariff from mobileshop on the web and left...

Orange shop in Tottenham Court Rd now say end of the week or even a week after!

Also they still have not confirmed prices, and said they may be subject to change at any time.

Last week I was told if I went on the 50 /month tariff I could get the phone for 150 and downgrade to the 15/month tariff a month later, and get 2000 free texts for the month and 50 off from the refer-a-friend plus 50 off for my old phone (I think I must have a 7 year old non-sms one lying around somewhere -does that count?).

So where is the CHEAPEST TOTAL COST place now - don't mind being on a high tariff for first x months as long as the total year cost is lower! I won't make a lot of calls (as I have free sms text and talktime with no monthly charges with my 02 sim, and I have broadband and free calls at home) -typically 1.50 a month.

The sweet spot seems to be to get a 30 to 50 monthly contract and switch down as soon as possible to a 15 contract.

This works out cheaper than buying the phone outright (315 plus whatever it costs to unlock, as opposed to 450).

The cheapest I know of is mobileshop. You can pay 30pm for 4 months, then switch to a lower tariff (say 15pm) and pay 60 for the phone. This gives (assuming 15pm) a total of 300, with lots of free calls, texts etc. Alternatively, you can get the phone for free with 50pm for 4 months, and then lower tariff, but this is slightly more expensive - 320, but with even more free calls for the first 4 months.

However, they are not fast. I pre-ordered mine 2 weeks ago. Yesterday they announced (on the website) that they were in stock, but my order is still reporting "stock problems".

orange is pretty much guesswork. 1 yr cost is assuming you drop down to 15/month after the lockin.
Bonus of 2k texts is first 6 months only

Sweetspot seems to be mobilshop 200 - though I shelled out the extra 20 to double my first 4 months talktime.
