Just spotted this in the new Orange catalog. As usual no-one knows when it's coming at my local Orange store. I'm getting a bit shaky at that 160 X 160 px screen though - the photo shows just how bitty that screen text is looking at that resolution !!

I just went into the Orange store - and was amazed to see the treo in the September catalogue! Store have no idea when it's due - but say that it normally makes it in the month of the catalogue.

On a seperate note, carphone warehouse say..

    Hi <>

We are expecting our initial stock of the treo 600 in the first week of October.

    Kind regards

I never cared too much about the phone color so I hadn't joined the "favorite Treo 600 color debate", but boy is the Orange logo ugly!

I don't know much about this company and its history, so I might be missing something about what's behind this name. If there isn't any profound thing behind it, but I wonder how much "Orange" spent on finding this wonderful name and designing the intriguing logo

I got off the phone with some one an an Orange shop who said that they were expecting it either at the end of the month or the start of Oct. He also said that he thought that it was going to cost 400 WITH a contract. He thought that this price was for 200+ mins a month!!

Sounds like the usual UK rip-off fiasco to me. Will an imported sim-free phone from the US work here ???

That's a crazy price when the SE P800 is going for 229 on their web site. Granted the P800 is much older, but this is still very steep! I hope he was wrong.

That's about $640 for the USAers reading this.

Gonna sell a gajillion of 'em, alrightee!

I have to say the Orange logo doesn't go well at all with the gunmetal, but just to comment on your remarks: Orange is THE telco brand and is widely respected for it here in Europe. Even Vodafone will admit this. The operators here don't compete on quality of network - there's no point in it because in general the only time customers experience call drops or poor reception is when they're in very rural regions or in high speed trains. Instead they have to compete on customer service and services on top of the standard voice services. Obviously having a strong brand is key in this and though you may not like the name and the logo, they managed to establish it to the level where people will recognize something as Orange only by the color and the font.

You may want to visit their web site. You will quickly notice its clarity and the consistency of the style.

I personally dig the logo...I think its "edgy" hopefully that is the correct term. I would like to know why the orange t600 is thinner than the sprint is it due to the lack of bulge on the earpiece?

    Mol:

Thanks for the information. I can see how the name/color/logo are unusual and thus would be very recognizable. I have seen it in Europe and never found it objectionable (though I always wondered about the choice). What triggered writing about it is that it looks really bad on the gun metal background.

Totally agree with you. I think it would look much better with the silver background.

Perhaps 10/8 (The date on the screen) is the date you will be able to purchase. Why else display that date ?

Of course in the UK, that's August 10. Hopefully we dont' have to wait that long.

They probably wanted to be cute, sort of like Apple, but instead it is boring. The advantage (for Orange) is that you can spot it a mile away.

i'm flying to london tomorrow, sep 12. i was planning to head straight over to an orange store to see if i could get a treo 600 before i came home on sep 16. doesn't look good now, does it?

The Orange logo is clean and simple and it works. Some of the best designs often are. I don't really like T-Mobile's logo. It's way too busy and distracting.

As far as which logo I prefer on the Treo 600? None. The thing I like about the GSM version is that you can switch carriers whenever you want to, and now you can even take your number with you! Putting a logo on the top is like branding cattle... Sssssssssss!!!

Do you think the UK is gonna get the Treo 600 before the US market does??

As for me, I'd rather have just the Handspring logo.

I completely agree on the GSM/GPRS -- I still have bitter memories of the Palm i705/Palmnet (proprietary CDPD) services-rate shock:
"Looking back at your past three months of usage, you consumed 2993.00 kilobytes on average. This would equate to a monthly charge of $236.89 under the new pricing." - The Palm Wireless Team

Just checked with Orange about 5 minutes ago about the price and this time they said :

    300 on any talk plan
    4096 ish colours
    4 hr talk time
    16mb
    Launch Sept / October

This was from a 'product specialist' whatever that is.
Is it just me or is the spec going down and down....

Perhaps a silly question, but, if I buy a UK phone and pop-out the SIM card to replace it with a US GSM SIM card, will it work?
