Im looking into this phone, but have not been able to try it at the local sprint store (idiots). Can you access ebay and google through this phone's browser? I know it doesn't support java . I guess that means a lot of web page functionality won't be there? Anyone keep up with auctions on ebay with the treo 300?

Let me know any other web experiences on this phone as my local sprint store is run by monkeys.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

easiest way is through the google and ebay pqa's. see other threads on this board for installing web clipping libraries so you can use pqa's

Just wanted to jump in here, even though I haven't used my phone yet (just got two today!). When you say Java, I'm quite certain you mean JavaScript. Many web pages out there use JavaScript, but few use Java applets. Blazer supports neither (though that doesn't necessarily mean that the page won't render in a working manner). Xiino supports some JavaScript. There's supposedly a browser out there that supports some Java (I forget the name - you can do a search here or I'm sure someone else will chime in).

As far as Google and eBay are concerned: Yes, you can do both. However, I'd recommend configuring the phone for PQA (web clipping) support and using the eBay applet rather than browsing to eBay.

Welp, you beat my post. I didn't know about the Google PQA, I'll have to check that out. Is it noticeably faster than browsing to Google via Blazer?

Yeah i meant javascript. OK I think that answers my questions except now I need to research PQA's and web clippings. What I could really use now are some links to info/downloads. I'm new to this subject. Help Anyone?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

I haven't found anything for ebay, but for Google there is a mobile web site. The link is "www.google.com/palm"

You don't need PQA's for either Google or eBay.

    Google:

    http://www.google.com/palm

    eBay:

    Am I missing something?

there are multiple ways to use most of these sites. i found the pqa's easier, but i have bookmarks for the ones you put up also.

Granted. But, there are many problems with PQA's in general oftentimes instability and memory usage come to mind). As an example, the e-Bay PQA is huge (what...165K?) with no real added benefit over the direct link URL.

The eBay PQA I loaded is only 24K. The advantage of PQAs is that they can be significantly faster than browsing because the graphical elements are all stored locally and essentially just text data is transmitted back and forth. An additional advantage (IMO) is that you get a dedicated icon for the applet, which can be easier/quicker to launch.

Using Xiino it takes me about 8 seconds to fully load google and ebay pages (w/o graphics)...may vary, but this seems about usual

I understand what you are saying. I guess my point is I cannot see any added benefit, all things being equal, of using a PQA (and it's associated overhead) versus a direct link via Xiino (or sometimes, Blazer) which I find very fast, to a PDA-friendly web page.

BTW, the e-Bay PQA referenced by aarons12 is 161K. So your 24K one isn't all that bad.

i would like to know where the 24k one is too!!

I'm pretty sure I found it via a link somewhere on this forum. I'll try to track it down and let you know. Otherwise, I could email it to you.
