Sometimes I get this "status" message instead of the usual "T Mobile" on my Treo 270.

If I'm on a current call, and then my status changes to the SOS mode only, my LED light blinks red and the call doesn't cancel or get cut-off. I can keep talking. But once I disconnect, I can't make another call till this status message changes back to "T Mobile."

This happens at my friends home in Seattle, where I usually get 3-4 bars of signal strength. Sometimes it abruptly changes late at night, and I put my SIM card in my brand new reliable Nokia 3390 and that one has the same problem, can't call out. So I know it's not because the Treo 270 is crappy or anything.

I'm assuming with SOS only, I only can make a 911 call.

You assume correctly. When that message is displayed, it means you have no coverage from your own operator, but other GSM networks are available, so you can dial 911. It's a standard GSM feature.
