I know this topic has been beat to hell - but I am looking for a definitive answer.

SMS - it doesn't work when my wife is trying to send it to me via her Samsung A500. I get this msg that says "click on http://smwl.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do"

I would rather not pay for any additional software but will do so in order to get this feature to finally work. What is the deal with SMS? Is Sprint supporting this?

And if I am to go third party - any recommendations?

As of today there is no "true" SMS support from Sprint. There has been speculation and discussion on this board on when that will happen.

You can get PDA Apps' Treo300SMS to get the functionality to send and receive SMS messages. That will cost you 20 bucks.

even with Treo300SMS from PDAapps, you will STILL get "click on http://smwl.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do"

Only if Treo300SMS is not configured correctly:->

Do you think the uc in the above url stands for "under construction"?

ok - if i was to call up Sprint *shiver* - would they have any clue what http://smwl.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do is and why its popping up? Has anyone spoken to any higher level techs or the infamous "help desk"?

A good follow up question is why SMS is not fully supported yet...

If you talked to Wireless Web, they would know about the URL. And they would tell you that's the 100% correct way it should be, according to their system.

Sprint does not have real SMS going right now. Instead SMSes get converted to something they call shortmail. Shortmail is not delivered directly to your phone, instead it's stored on a web site. You are then send a one-way text message indicating that you have new shortmail, along with the url to visit it.

This is how SMS behaved on my Vision-enabled Hitachi P300 phone also.

The only options are to wait for Sprint to implement REAL SMS.. which is rumored to be coming, but could be many months or eons away. OR.. you can buy TreoSMS. Take your pick.

TreoSMS doesn't fix Sprint -- but what it does is intercept the 'new shortmail at this crappy URL' message and then goes and auto-retrieves the shortmail for you. It then makes the shortmail showup on your Treo like a one-way text message would. So it gives the functionality of SMS through a little hackery.

One thing about TreoSMS is since it depends on the shortmail website working, if that website is down, it can't receive your shortmails. Of course, you still wouldn't be able to retrieve them without TreoSMS in that case.

    So, wait or pay.

I have had an SMS alert message telling me to go to http://smwl.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do for over two weeks now. Every time I try to "browse" the link with Blazer I get the infamous "Cannot Display Requested Page".

I guess this means SMS is down? Would I get the same message if I purchased TreoSMS? I'm afraid of spending $20 and still not be able to use SMS.

I've tried to do research on this subject here, but to be honest I'm a little confused by reading all the posts.

I'm pretty sure if you used TreoSMS it would work fine.
I think Blazer just isn't capable of going there.
Download the TreoSMS trial and find out. If it doesn't work, you don't need to buy it. =P

I have TreoSMS, and it works fine for me. I can send and reply to messages to and from other cellular folks (both Sprint and non-Sprint). I do also get that same funky http://smwl.uc.sprintpcs.com/sml/wap.do notification thing, but I <believe> that's only when I receive a message at my vision mail account, which is useless to me anyway. Phone to phone messages work fine.
Try TreoSMS and see if it works. If it does, buy it. If not, punt it. It should work for you.

Well I tried TreoSMS and it works. I don't know if I should be happy or sad. Now that I know how easy it is to do SMS I'm irratated at Sprint for their "version" of SMS which sends me useless notifications I can't do anything with in Blazer!

I guess I better go register my version of TreoSMS now....

    Thanks for the help,

Im still a little confused on SMS. If Sprint does not really support SMS and I send one from my Treo to my wife, who has a non-Treo sprint phone... How does she get the SMS message? Does it appear as a browser message, or something like that.

    Thanks!

If it's a wireless web enabled phone, then I believe she sees it the same way. She gets a text message saying "you have new shortmail, check the shortmail page". She then navigates the wireless web pages to the shortmail section.

You can of course TEST these things and find out for yourself. nothing like experience to tell you what works and doesn't.

The difference is that she is actually able to get to their URL.. my old P300 vision phone was able to.

Using TreoSMS300, how do you reply? I have to send a new one to the person (they have a moto 2-way, esssentially e-mail). Is there any way around this? Also they seem to have same incoming character limitation. anyway around this too?

    thanks
