Anyone upgrade to OS 4, is it possible, do the Handspring programs (phonebook+, etc) still work?

    Thanks

I believe that the Treo 300 runs on the Palm 3.5 OS and is not upgradeable.

    Check the documentation, though

If you did upgrade, it would probably mess up your phone because the OS has been modified specifically for the data and phone apps. Any upgraded OS likely would not be optimized for these services unless Handspring itself comes out with an update.

Why would you want to upgrade? I canlt think of one thing 4.1 can do that 3.5.2H cannot.

All Treos are upgradeable to OS 4.1. However, the application needed to do this is proprietary to Handspring. The GPRS update didn't even include it. In fact, the GPRS update runs a flash tool that overwrites various applications in ROM to upgrade the Treo. Until Handspring decides that Treos can benefit from a new Palm OS, we are all stuck. One interesting app that might work though is Jack Sprat from Brader Technology. This allows you to delete the BS out of a ROM image, like City Time, the various languages, etc. This would free up some space in the Treo'sflashrom and allow one to install additional apps in the flash with Jack Flash. Should be interesting.

Palm OS 4.1 buys you very little new functionality - the prime purpose of 4.x was to add SD/MMC support and a few minor changes related to security and time-zones. They are surely not worth worrying about. Palm successfully created the marketing message that upgrades were free and that you gained incremental features - this train stopped running a long time ago with paid updates and incompatible manufacturer versions. There is no point waiting in the station.

Sony has proprietary software and so does Handspring. The package in the Treo is already well beyond what is available in Palm OS 4.1 in terms of wireless functionality.

The grass is greener on your side IMHO.

News to me. According to all the literature I've found, the Treos' Palm OS is not in Flashable Rom. Where did you find your information?
