    From everything I've read not only is there not one, there can't be one. The microphone is completely segregated from the OS.

    If the microphone can be controlled by the OS, I wish to have a digital recorder with the function that can record a phone conversation too!!!!.........make a wish!!!!

    Obviously it can control the mic, but it can't listen to it. So the OS can turn it on and off but it has no idea if there is any sound coming into it.

    I guess I'm totally baffled.
    What WERE the engineers thinking?
    You've got a mic. You've got an OS.
    Putting them together doesn't seem like unthinkable rocket science here!

    Or is there some major thingie I'm missing?

    33mhz processor, Palm OS. No standard palm allowed for such moves, so it would have taken a lot of programming and massive delays to implement such a feature. In the next generation (Palm OS5) it'll be common if not standard.
