Both PalmInfocenter and PDABuzz have posted articles about rumours of a new Treo90 based on an on-line catalog entry at CompuSmart (Canadian electronics retailer). This one comes with an SD slot.

    Let the rampant speculation begin!

Talk about a lack of leadership.I love my Prisim, with the thin modemplus it is great unit. Does all I want and has never failed me. Why can't Handspring just come out in plain english and say what it's plans are? They make great PDA's the springboard may have seen its day but, hey their products work and work well. At $169.00 the Edge is a great deal. I know when OS 5 comes out I'll be force to make a change, why oh why can't Handspring just come out and say in plain english what there plans for the future are? Enough of the ramble

The Treo 90 is rumored to be a color model with an SD-Slot, with the same form factor of the Treo 180, but sllightly thinner and not wireless. PDAbuzz claims it will be shipped in 13 days.

If this is true then HS is moving in the right direction finally! The bulky Gamebo....errrr Springboard expansion slot is finally getting axed. Great news!

I don't blam HS for keeping its plans secret. It does not want to make the same mistakes Palm made with the M500 and HS with the Treo 180. It does not want to canibilize current sales for two long. This is great news for HS fans.

I think the Treo 90 is great. If they can keep the cost under $300 and compete evenly with the m130, they'll have a winner. It's everything the m130 is, but with more RAM, and keyboard instead of Graffiti. Not only will this help capture new users who have been afraid of graffiti, but upgrading users who are tired of graffiti will finally have a functional and reasonably priced alternative.
If it's much over $300, forget it.

    So, where's the Treo 90 forum? ;-)

So what impact does downgrading the color have? What is the advantage gained by dropping to 12 bit? Any word on resolution?

Hmmm...with this device, it makes one wonder what exactly Handspring thinks it's going to use to differentiate itself. A built-in keyboard? Sorry, but I don't think that'll do it. They're basically copying the m130 and adding a keyboard. And the rumored price is more expensive than the m130 by $20 or so. I think Hawkins needs to start burning the candle at both ends to finish his brain research, because _somebody_ needs to figure out what's wrong with the folks at Handspring.

    What an upbeat 2000th post.

    The better question is this:
will the 270 also have the SD slot?

More RAM + keyboard+better looks... if they price it right it could do well.. Does the 130 have an expantion slot?

Even if it is not that different than other models in the market, R&D was probably cheap since it's a downgraded 270.
So they'll have a model on the market for another audience without spending heaps on R&D. Sound smart to me...

and double the RAM + color + battery life (possibly). It's right up my wife's alley between not having to learn graffiti and only willing to learn the OS on a color device. Springboard should've been included unequivocably. Depending on what I see when I get her one, I may jump aboard.

Good Question, but by examining the manual for the TREO 270 (leaked, again by the FCC) it does not mention an SD slot anywhere within the document. I'm with you, I hope it's "In There!". If so, I'll buy. If not, I won't.

I usually defend Handspring on this board but I believe that they have lost it this time. Didn't they say that they were going to leave the organizer business? WHy called the thinga Treo 90 when Treo was suppose to mean wireless, PDA and something else (can"t remember LOL)? Perhaps this is something for the weirdos that want to carry around a pda and phone at the same time.

I an betting that the 270 will be exactly the same as the 180 (which seems like the last monochrome Palm OS device we will ever see). A lot of their 180 customers would be updaet if they include a sd slot in the 270. perhaps the Treo 360 will come full circle and add the SD in Treo 90.

I agree. Given the company's penny stock status, approaching anywhere near Sony's level of R&D is not an option. Limited resources require more lateral thinking.

After owning a Kyo, I would never consider buying another PDA without wireless connectivity, but I can see the potential for the T90 becoming popular. The keyboard will be a draw for newbies with a psychological resistance to Graffiti.

Well, I'm equivocal on the Springboard, at best. Despite portraying the Springboard interface as an expansion technology, Hawkins' goal from the outset was probably to develop the Treo, which is why the only unique module developed by Handspring (i.e. as opposed to Backup and modem units) was the Visorphone. Architecturally, the Treo is said to be essentially a Visor + Visorphone, which is why there probably will never be Springboard slots on wireless Treos.

Between consumer demand for smaller form factors and all the price/production/distribution problems associated with Springboards, it's pretty safe to say that the Springboard is dead.

    better looks
I don't think either of them really look better or worse than the other.
... if they price it right it could do well..
If the rumored price of $300 is accurate, that isn't 'right'. The m130 is $279 retail. Some places are even selling it for a little less. It also has better distribution channels and the brand recognition.
Does the 130 have an expantion slot?
Yep, and the Universal connector to ensure that add-ons should be relatively easy to find.

Not if it doesn't sell. No matter how cheap the R&D was, production costs money. If they were selling it for $200-250, they might have a shot. If it's priced over the m130, I don't think I see it going anywhere significant.

How is this a "communicator" and not an organizer as we've been hearing all along? It's a PDA with a keyboard and a non-springboard expansion slot. It's a palm... an organizer. How does this fit Handspring's strategy?

Do you all really think this is real? We've seen some good fakes before.

This is real. I suspect that Handspring will be pushing the3 PDA + Cell Phone angle with the Treo 90. There are a lot of people out there that want to carry two devices -- why? I do not know.

The third thing was pager. Cell/pda/pager replacement. The 90 is more like a Uneo.

I think Treo 90 will be popular with students, non-techies and women who like the tiny size (the dimensions/weight were on PDABuzz) and also cannot be bothered with Graffiti but like removable storage. I presume you can do all the usual SD stuff like running a dictionary in the main RAM but the monster data file is in the card. MS Mount is a pretty cool app for allowing non-SD savvy apps work with SD cards; handy for keeping your old software when you use SD cards.

If the screen is readable outdoors that will be a big plus. Some of the Sony designs are a bit too flash (read likely to be stolen) for my liking and the extended features like MP3 and cameras eat batteries at alarming rates. Treo 90 looks pleasantly understated. Most people dont use many of the bells and whistles. We all rave about them and do lots of differentiation on boards like this but the main mass of people use core functions only.
