I am in the UK. I recently purchased a Treo 180, with a BT Cellnet activation contract.

When I bought the Treo, I was assured it was unlocked and I would be able to use it with any SIM card, not only with my BT Cellnet one. I am using it with my Virgin SIM card now.

Everything seems to work fine, except the SMS reception. Sometimes, when someone sends me a message via SMS, I just get the notification but not the message. This is random, since some other times I get the messages (from the same senders) fine. I havent had this problem before, with any of the handsets I have used with this Virgin card, so it must be related to the Treo.

This is a BIG problem, since I can not see who sent me the SMS or what the text of the SMS is. In fact, if I am not by the phone when the SMS arrives to hear the SMS incoming alert, I am not even able to tell if I have received it at all. There are no traces on the Treo of any incoming messages.

Has anyone experienced the same problem? Any idea of what the problem can be? Isnt the SMS protocol identical for all the SMS providers?

I always assumed SMS would be the same regardless of the profider, but maybe the protocol is flexible....

    Have contacted HS or Virgin?

My UK Treo is currently using Vodaphone and all SMS messages are coming through just fine.

I used my Best Buy Treo with a Italian SIM with no SMS problems, other then I couldn't use VoiceStream's AIM over SMS, which makes sense.

I presume we are talking about ordinary 160 character SMS messages and not ringtones, animations or suchlike? It could be that Virgin are doing something funny on their network which is pre-programmed into the phone that you say works OK on Virgin. There is a lot of proprietary ROM software in phones despite their common appearance.

The problem described here is very familiar to me. When the unit is active - meaning screen on and phone powered, SMS messages arrive OK. This is the case also when the unit is left and the screen blanks. However after a "rest period" exceeding about 5 mins, any SMS messages arriving activate the alarm, and wake the screen, but do not display. The only way to access the message is to power the phone off and repower it, and then a magic message pops up saying its found messages on the SIM that are not on the Treo..........and offers to copy them.

After speaking to a product specialist at HS, I got the impression they know about it but there is no fix, however the explanation was wrapped up in a strange series of statements about how there is an "Efix" version, but the "GSR version has the fix but that is not out until the summer" and "I think the Efix may solve that, but I don't know becasue I haven't tested it personally" etc etc. I think he was Handspring's secret weapon agains grumbling customers...

Anyhow, its definitely a real problem, and no one has given me an sensible answer apart from "well take it back and get your money bacK' which wasn't a very commerial answer

Anyone else got any clues. Its damed annoying not getting SMS

Yes. Plain txt SMS messages. Nothing fancy.
