I had to switch out my PC at work because it was toast. Of course I had to reinstall Palm Desktop on the new PC. I downloaded it from the Palm website but I forgot that if you want the media function, you need to use the disc that came with the phone. I have the disc and I am ready to install it. At first I just threw in the disc because I thought it would automatically update the program or at least uninstall it and reinstall it. No go. Then I tried to uninstall the palm program from the PC so I could start fresh with the disc. That is not working either. I am getting the errors that you see below.

Any idea's on what’s going on here???? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I found this info through Google:

"Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\iTunes.msi
A common error message when trying to reinstall/upgrade a software program (like iTunes etc). Here's a way to avoid getting it:
This message usually means a previous installation of a software is getting in the way of the new installation. It's kinda nutty that this would cause a problem, but we live in a nutty world. The fix is to download a free program from Microsoft that will totally and completely remove the old software. Then the new version can load unimpeded."

In my case, Dollface's solution didn't work. I had the problem with one of our administrative staff member's setups. I had to use REGEDIT to clean out the references to Palm software (I did a search for "PalmOne", note, there will be about a million results) and cleared them all out. I was then able to reinstall Palm Desktop.

IMO, Palm really needs its own Palm Desktop Uninstaller .EXE at this point, one that is intelligent enough to really clean things up. The current uninstaller leaves tons of garbage behind; in some cases, it leaves the whole Palm (or PalmOne) folder in Program Files, and there's so many left over registry entries that things are never truly clean unless you know your way around REGEDIT and can do it yourself.

(Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible for anyone who uses REGEDIT without understanding its ins and outs, and frigs up their machine. It is advisable to back up any registry keys you are unsure of by exporting them before you remove them, so that you could import them back in in case something goes wrong).

I use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall everything instead of Add/Remove programs. It launches the programs own uninstaller and then searches for remaining files/registry entries. Makes for much "cleaner" re-installs.

You need to run regedit and erase the palm files from the registry. Warning, this is tricky and critical. HKeyCurrent User> Software> Palm and HKey Local Machine>Software> Palm (if it's there)
