TreoSpot is a location based alarm and phone profile setting application for Palm Centro GSM smartphones.

TreoSpot will gather and store GSM Cell Global IDs (GID) in the background. GIDs consist of four "parts" - the Mobile Country Code (MCC), Mobile Network Code (MNC ), Location Area Code (LAC) and Cell Tower ID (CellID) that uniquely identify a particular cell tower. Alerts and profiles may be enabled for any particular location once the location database has been built on your device.

So, this is a brand new alert mechanism that you can use, in addition to time-based and event-based alarms that are already available on the Palm Centro.

TreoSpot v2.0 is now completely rewritten to take advantange of the newer APIs made available with the Palm Centro. The software architecture is also completely new. In-fact it is so new that it should not be called "TreoSpot" anymore. Also, it does not work on Treo's, but only on Centro GSM devices - could somebody suggest a better name?

Features of TreoSpot v2.0 for Palm Centro GSM:
    • Automatic collection of GIDs.
    • Change phone settings when you arrive at a particular location. (e.g., forward calls to your home land-line when you arrive there).
    • You can set the Theme, TimeZone (experimental), Mute Phone and System Sounds and Call-Forwarding.
    • Alert at a particular location (e.g., set-up an alert to purchase groceries on the way back from work, when you are near your favourite store).
    • Timed phone settings profile cancellation.
    • Tiny PRC (~ 40 KB !!!).
TreoSpot is freeware (as are all my other PalmOS software - see: http://www.swCP3.com/TreoTown/TreoTown.html). In case you are wondering, only TreoStar and TreoProc are not (yet) compatible with the Centro.

I'd really appreciate DONATIONS to keep this going.

Can you explain what it is for those, "less technical" folks???
    "Actions speak louder than words!"

REX >Palm III > Palm IIIc > Palm V> Palm m505 >Kyo 7135> Treo 650> ARTIC Treo 680> and finally to the Centro!!!

Maybe there is a way to use it on the 650-680?
I know the APIs work only for the centro, but maybe copying some libs would help

That's a great idea... it never occurred to me. And it is worthy of further investgation... versions of TreoSpot < v2.0 used a direct modem connection to query location information. Not very elegant... but it worked, if unreliably. I'll try what you have suggested on on my 650... of-course things may not be so straightforward, or Palm would have upgraded the 680 ROM for this (the 680 is still a "current" product in several markets).

If you need any help with development or testing I'd be willing to help.
    Good Luck!

Of-course!!! thanks... I'll be in touch!!! Currently, I'm designing some new functionality for TreoSpot... It doesn't appear too attractive to users. In the meanwhile, I'll see if I can figure out the phone library stuff on the Centro.

I downloaded your first version, installed it, and used it a couple of days trying to decide how to make it useful and use it in day to day doings.

I updated to your latest version and still find it works great. However, I am still playing with it and trying to come up with some sort of unique name and some explanations on using it for the lay folks.

This past week I went to Mississippi to visit with mom and during the road trip I used the app and must say it worked flawlessly. Still trying to come up with real world scenarios for practical applications but must say it does work great and generates alarms when I enter certain areas.

Hi Quickster!!! Didn't see this before mailing you...

I use it for two things: 1) To forward calls to my land-line when I reach home or my office land-line when I reach office. Works good for that... and 2) to alert me to purchase somehing when I'm in a specific place.

There are two other features that may be useful to somebody else - automatic TimeZone (it is experimental - as I still have not figured out the "DST" thing) setting and muting of phone sounds. But considering how the other two features work, I can see how useful these can be.

The important feature is the "timed" profile - So that one does not get stuck in a profile that is unusable under some circumstances. A particular profile is not re-activated on re-entering an area if it is already active...

Do let me know if you need any additional help.

This complete lack of interest in TreoSpot is not very encouraging.

I'm sure TreoSpot is a great application. Unfortunately I cannot test it out since I'm using a CMDA Treo on the Sprint network. Is there any hope you can make this work outside the GSM realm?

I'd very much like to do this as it will instantly improve the number of users of TreoSpot from zero to 1 million (or something like that).

But unfortunately, to develop utilities of this type (that use the PalmSDK and radio) one needs a physical, registered device (something that I'll probably never come across in India).

Actually, I've taken special care that the code has nothing in it that is GSM specific (other than the simple code to get the GID) and so it can easily be "translated" to CDMA.

hey great app, good idea, just that i haven't found any usage for my everyday life yet..

Like, for e.g, if i need to buy some bread when i pass by the minimart, i can set it to sound off when i'm at that place. But the problem is, i need to be at the minimart to log that ID, and since i'm at that place already, why dont i just buy the bread and save on the trouble to set the alarm?

still trying to find a use =)

by the way i think ur other progs work great!

Some things - unlike ring-tones and wallpapers - can't give instant gratification and may actually require a little bit of work and some patience.

TreoSpot will become more and more useful as you build the database and keep interacting with it. Besides one needs to get a feel of how the tower registrations happen. e.g., if I leave the phone on my study table I can expect registrations every five minutes or so... probably because the signal is weak there... on the other hand, if I step out of the house, the signal is probably stronger and the registrations are less frequent when I'm in the neighbourhood... Unlike GPS positioning, cell tower positioning is less accurate and is more "iffy."

I now use TreoSpot for only one purpose... to forward my calls to my landline when I reach home. And cancel call-forwarding when I'm out. Sometimes I set it to alert myself to carry something when I'm leaving office. For these kinds of things I find it quiet useful.

I thought that automatic TimeZone settings would be useful for people who travel frequently... still haven't figured out the DST thing. TreoSpot is in its infancy... with a lot of features yet to come if there is some interest among the user community.

It is cool that a Centro can be given a repertoire of location-based actions!

So far, it looks like I can use this to avoid having to remember things later. One day, I hope it can surprise me with an appropriate action I didn't anticipate!
