There have been a couple of interesting news updates on Engadget about EDGE Evolution which is an upgrade to the EDGE specification and will allow for more bandwidth and faster data speeds.

What I am wondering is if Palm would be able to issue a firware upgrade that could take advantage of the new specification thus giving us 3G speeds on our EDGE devices.

It would be interesting to hear everyones' thoughts on this.

The crippling thing about GPRS (and EDGE) is that one cannot have both data and voice at the same time. (Ok... that's not entirely true, but that is the most common implementation). But I suppose the software upgrade mentioned in the article(s) are more on the carrier side... For manufacturers, this is bonanza... they can sell a stop-gap "upgrade" solution before the actual 3/3.5G rollout begins... This is important, as it means $$$ without going through a costly procurement process.

Even if it ware possible to upgrade existing mobile devices, there is no way device manufacturers would pass up the opportunity... by issuing a "free" upgrade for existing phones.

For AT&T users I am wondering if the idea of faster EDGE speeds contributes to the statement from the AT&T CEO that all phones on their Network will be 3G within months.
