Neither the Treo or the Centro have wi-fi capabilities. No software can help this as wi-fi requires hardware that is not present in these devices.

No. There is a WiFi SD card but the PalmOS is unable to utilize it.

Well, there were several add-on products like this for various Treo models.

But who knows what will be available, if anything, for the Centro?

Garnet OS phones cannot use WiFi. The OS supports only two radios in a device, you have the phone radio and Bluetooth radio.

WiFi is not always free at hotspots. It is up to the user to determine whether there are charges.

Not possible. Honestly, with Sprint's EVDO network what's the point anyway? :-)

Perhaps the coffee shop you were in was an AT&T Hotspot. They do charge users who do not have AT&T premium DSL or do not have the monthly WiFi Hotspot subscription (if they don't have AT&T premium DSL).

I know the iPhone has wi-fi but I think their circumstances were different...aren't the cell companies reluctant to sell phones that offer wi-fi because it cuts into their profits as they try to sell data packages?

No Palm has the hype of the iPhone and Palm could not bully Sprint or Verizon into carrying on of their devices. So even if the Treo/Centro could support wi-fi...what carrier would support the device?
No more rhymes...and this time I mean it!

thanks for the link on the wifi cards...........

I found another place to get them, the 700 looks like it's manufactured by palm but not one for Centro. Yet. This is a must have for me with a crappy coverage area I am in so I will be checking frequently.

Those wifi cards are for the WIndows version of the Treo,. Far as I know there is no wifi avaliable for palm devices. I read once it was the phone companys that didnt want wifi so you have to use there data networks.

How about a BT to Wifi adapter? That would get them.

for people like me that are surrounded by universities in their city but don't have broadband phone service. i'm lucky if i get 50kbps on my phone and it always times out.....and i have full bars on my cell all the time. there just isn't highspeed for our networks here...stupid verizon and sprint. i live only an hour from indianapolis too.

so ya, wifi would be nice for me, because almost everywhere has free wifi in our city because of the universities.

There is a wi-fi adapter for the Treo 650 listed. The 650 is a Palm OS device.

y'all are forgetting one critical thing ... the Centro uses a microSD card, not standard SD. I don't think there are any microSD Wi-Fi adapters out there. Early on, Treo 650s could be hacked to use the Palm Wi-Fi SD card. BT to Wi-Fi is pointless since BT is a huge bottleneck. You'd be better off using Sprint EV-DO.

BT is really slow I agree but I think there could be places that have a low to no signal so BT to wifi could be a nice option if available, if possible.

This might work in the Centro when it starts to ship...
