I keep seeing the term RESET, and also "soft reset" and "hard reset"

Can someone kindly explain to the n00b what those terms mean? Is it simply "restarting" versus "shuttingdown" in terms of a mac/windoze box?

Soft reset (battery out) involves the device restarting via the Palm logo screen, but retains your data and settings.

During a Hard reset (zero-out reset) you will get the question asking if you want to erase all data, and at the end you will have a factory fresh device.

    Don’t forget warm reset.
a warm reset basically puts your palm in a type of "safe mode" . Meaning it turns off all unnecessary running applications... i.e. phone, infrared etc... But still gives you the ability to browse your contacts calendar call log and other applications. To perform a warm reset keep the “up” key held down while you perform a standard reset.

    Standard Reset
    Remove/Replace the battery

    Hard Reset (Zero Out)
    Wipe phone of all memory
Hold down the "end key while performing a standard reset. when access powered logo appears (Treo 700,755,680) or grey palm logo (treo 650)
release the end key and press up to format
