I thought that I would post some images of a Centro screen next to a 700p so you can see what Palm is talking about. As you can see from the pics, the Centro LCD is actually thicker than the 700 do to this protective layer which you can clearly see. Let me state this again, this is not user replaceable it is pressed into the LCD as the top layer with a border of foam/sponge to help absorb shock. The LCD is still glass and will break just like all other LCD's, this one is just more scratch resitant. If you carry your Centro in your pocket with change/keys/cig lighter. IT WILL GET SCRATCHED. If you are wary, put a screen protector on anyways. They are so clear now, the only way you will be able to tell is if it is hand cut. Once exact protectors(machine cut) are made this will be a none issue. You should get equipment protection anyways for such a high tech device. Just my 2 pennys.....

Remember its scratch resitant not scratch proof......

Update: So got another broken Centro in today a was just curious to see iff the customer had gotten the device wet. It was swapped by managment with no questions asked wit a brand new one. Customer stated it was put on charger when they went to sleep and woke up to a no responsive phone.
I had more time to spend taking this one apart and low a behold the screen protector is removeable. I had tried on the previous units to no avail, but I had not applied much pressure to the LCD. Since this device was DOA, I had less reservations about forcing it off. Its about as thick as a sheet of overhead projector film once removed

There is a front and side view.

One issue, air bubbles; once removed it creates a chance for air bubbles and dust to trap underneath of it. Im not sure how they will handle this if it does become a servicable part when and if the lcd is ever replaced. They may come preattached or come on a sheet precut for removal.

I was able to get the bubbles out of this one using heat gun and a business card. Once I know if this will ever be a replaceable option for people I will update again.

So had they got it wet?
  8. #48
No, I didn't find any evidence that suggested that. It was probably just a defective unit that stopped working after a few days. They left with a brand new unit

Just checked Shieldzone's website and centro skins available for order.

Anyone ever used the full body one?

I just got an email from shieldzone yesterday and they told me they didn't have plans at this time nor do they plan to and if I wanted one now I should custom order. HA! now that's funny. I told my wife i'd just wait cuz they are just tryin' to get extra money from me w/the custom order, she was like "sure they are" looks like maybe my email and maybe other's showed them they should get on it.

I got my Seidio screen protector last week - it went on smooth, no problems. I'm not having any clarity issues like I did a Shieldzone one that I put on my 700wx last year, which caused some sparkle issues.

I honestly feel a lot more comfortable, even with some confirmation from Muffn about the permanent screen protector. It's just something personal, and the $6 for it was well worth my personal security, especially with keys and the like in my pocket.

All in all, I think it's well worth it for the piece of mind.

Do you think that when you take off your screen protector, it may remove the "permanent" one?

It's a static fit, not an adhesive one. Shouldn't be an issue.

Yah, what crog said - Seidio screen protectors are static, so that won't be an issue. Has anyone else added a screen protector, or do you think it's useless now that we have confirmation?

never useless if the built in one can't be replaced by you. I'm not a belt and suspenders guy by nature, but I'll put one on by the time mine comes. I have a demo to play with until then. Could care less about that. But if you do scratch theirs and you have to take it in to get it replaced, that's a royal PITA for something that cost $5 (or less when other companies start making them) could've prevented it. I might take my chances until DealExtreme gets their cheap ones in.

DE takes forevery to ship, but I really need to get a 3-in-1 for my DS. Just stick with the Seidio protector, works great, can't even tell it's on!

I love the Centro, but after a week of normal stylus use, many scratches. No abuse, no dropping involved. Maybe a poorly finished stylus is to blam.

I've never had this issue with Treo 300, 600, 700p devices.

I have insurance, but will see what happens when I go to a Sprint store. Any advice?

So the built-in screen protector didn't protect?

Right. It didn't protect. Of course, I ordered Seidio protectors as soon as I brought the centro home, just in case. Too late, however.
