I've had my AT&T branded Treo 680 (actually... its a Cingular one but the firmware was updated for AT&T after the merge) for just under a year. It still works great but for the past 2-3 days, I find that my device cannot receive picture/MMS messages. I can send pics as well as regular text and I have no trouble accessing the internet or my e-mail. For some reason, it just won't receive picture messages.

I called AT&T tech support and spent about 3 hours on the phone with them. We tried removing the battery & SIM card, we checked the network settings, heck... we even did a (gasp) hard reset. Still nothing. We swapped out the SIM card and put it in another AT&T 680 that belonged to a co-worker and we received a picture message test from the tech support folks. They even tried removing the feature from my account and adding it back again. Still nada.

AT&T says its a device issue. Luckily, its still under warrenty so I will get a replacement. Now... its more of a curiosity thing. Can anyone think of why it would just all of a sudden stop receiving picture messages? Again, regular texting work great and I can send MMS... just not receive. Everything else on the phone works fine. Also, I have not installed any new programs in months.

Just wondering if someone would know the answer... this is killing me!

Are you using Chatter? Chatter cannot be running when sending or receiving MMSs, regardless of carrier.

No, I am not using Chatter. I use the messaging program that comes pre-loaded on the Treo 680 as well as the VersaMail app.

Ok... so I received my replacment phone from AT&T (thank God for warrenties). I moved my SIM from my old phone to the replacement, moved my battery, turned on... re-installed my backup data... and guess what... STILL NO PICTURE messages. All other features & functions work fine.

Is it possible that there is a file on my Treo that has become corrupted or deleted or something?

Sure. If you hard reset and test before restoring your data, can you receive MMS?

I did a hrad reset and did not restore my data and yes, I am now able to receive MMS messages. Any idea what file it could be?

On a whim, I deleted the Message_Database.pdb from the Backup folder on my PC to see if that would fix it. I then synced and restored my data and again lost the MMS receive ability. Again, any ideas on what file(s) I should be looking at? Any ideas on a fix?

    None at all.

    I suggest a binary search:
    1. Move half of the files out of the backup directory to a holding directory
    2. Restore the remaining files and test
    3. If you can't receive MMS, then you know the file is in that group; move half of those files to another holdling directory
    4. Hard reset, restore the remaining files and test
    5. If you still can't receive MMS, then repeat step 3 with that group.

If you can now receive, switch that group with the group you moved to the last holding directory....and so on until you find the one problem file. Once you find that file, delete it and move the contents of all the holding directories to the backup directory and restore.

Ok... I am still working on this. I figured I'd play with it today as I have a lot more uninterrupted time today. I just did a hard reset after backing up my data. Once the hard reset was complete, I sent myself a picture message and did not receive it. Hmmm... I will post my progress as the day progresses. I wonder why I did not receive a picture message after doing the hard reset, though.

Well, if your phone won't receive MMS while "clean" after a hard reset, it's a waste of time looking for a 3rd party culprit.

This is clearly a ATT Provisioning issue. I had 2 650's with ATT and constantly was having to get advanced level tech support to reprovision and get the picture mail working.

This is before I defected ATT two months ago for ALL the issues.

Ok... I did another hard reset and got the pic I had originally sent. Not sure what the issue was there.

my situation mirrors yours except i am using the att/cingular device unlocked on T-mo. as in your case, i can send but seemingly never receive any MMS. wouldn't this tend to rule out att as the source of difficulty? i know that T-mo does NOT support the device as they stopped carrying treos with the 650?? my 600 which was proprietary to Tmo at the time always sent/received flawlessly. all else works always.

anyone have any other ideas? this is enough to make anyone nuts, the idea that these devices don't work seamlessly on major carriers, is unconscionable imho.

There seems to be some kind of mismatch between the ATT ROM and T-mobile. Palm branded, unlocked 680's don't have a problem with receiving MMS on the T-Mo network. My 680 fell into that category early in its life, but in June, I installed a custom ROM taken from the first ATT ROM update...and promptly lost the ability to receive MMS over T-Mo's setup.

only to add after messing around with this from 530 am ( a good time to deal with tier 3 support! )..
they tell me that there should be no problem with my device per se, after reconfiguring the "message center" phone number on the MMS side of t-Mo..( plain text apparently operates on the vox side, not data..)..

they then tell me after 30+ minutes.."oh yeah, seems we have a "network outage" for all MMS in your region ( LA, CA )..and that all should work again" once they trouble ticket THEIR network!

    right. when pigs fly.

but we'll see. only to add that anyone using an "unlocked" 680 WILL need to reconfig their network seeting in "messaging" for it to "retrieve"..sending seems to work regardless. mine was still defaulting ( understandably ) to the ATT 206 area PH #...

    what a *^&)7*& hassle!

have you resolved your issue with a different ROM setup?? and where might a find a "cleaner" more compatible ROM ota d'load??..

    thx.....

While you are correct that Palm branded, unlocked 680's don't have a problem receiving MMS on the T-Mobile network, they DO have a problem receiving FULL-SIZED MMS messages on the T-Mo network! It's a known problem, and T-Mo doesn't seem to care about it.

No one has, at least no one using one of the only available custom roms on T-mo's network.

The delivered ROM on the Palm-branded unlocked 680 works just fine.

That's due to the design of T-mo's network. It's always been that way; it was the same on my 650. It's got nothing to do with the 680.

i appreciate the clarification! is there any way i can get the unbranded ROM? hard reset and re-install the other ROM for an unlocked device?

this does all seem to stem from the fact that the device is ATT configured and of course i had to d'load the newer version with the camera patch and newer 1.9(?) software version. which again, is ATT's.

    beyond this..more stuff the 680 will ( but won't ) "do'!

i'll never again buy a device that has BEEN unlocked, but rather one direct from palm.
