I just bought the full verion of kinoma. I can save the movies from archive.org http://www.archive.org/details/feature_films , copy them to my card and then play them on my treo, but I'd like to be able to watch the streaming video. Is there anyway I can do that?

Kinoma is saying "unsupported" but then plays the saved version :-0

Hrmmm, I'm not sure what's up there. I'll escalate this with our engineers.

Until then, the MPEG-4 links under "Play/Download" seem to work fine.

If I use play/download I get a error message saying the page cannot be downloaded.

I even tried going to the links that go directly to the movie files that are available by substituting "download" for "details" in the main page address for each movie.

What settings should I have checked off in Kinoma? I was having trouble viewing some of the videos that were listed right in Kinoma in google education. I switched to download and external and then the next one worked, but not the ones I had already tried. It looked like the error message might have been stored as it came up so quickly.

I'm sure I'm being clear as mud here :-( Sorry :-(

It should be possible to view most streaming video that is slow enough for dial up, right?

I watched some Charlie Chaplin this afternoon after I saw your note. Can you let me know what URL you're using?

OK the main site for "Satanic Rights of Dracula" is

    http://www.archive.org/details/satan...hts_of_dracula

but subbing "download" for "details" will take us here and make things a little clearer.

    http://www.archive.org/download/sata...hts_of_dracula

hmm...copying these links by "copy shortcuts" gives me urls that I can try pasting into Kinoma, instead of clicking from a webpage.

    http://ia311510.us.archive.org/1/ite...racula/srd.mov

    http://ia311510.us.archive.org/1/ite...of_Dracula.flv

I'll try pasting these. I'll let you know if it works. Otherwise, HELP!

When I click on the Night of the Living Dead link, it brings up PTunes, instead of Kinoma.

I can't get anything to play, download, or even save to card. Ptunes even comes up when I tell it to play. I have never had much luck with Kinoma.

I can only download them to my laptop, then transfer them to the card. I have a laptop right now...but with my life like it is...I can't depend on anything but my phone, so I'd really like to be able to find a way to watch these movies without involving a PC.

Also before I bought the full version, Kinoma did not work to play the saved movies.

Shame there's no trial version of Kinoma, but I guess they have a money-back guarantee?
Treo 755s in good condition available on ebay for $50-$75. No need to pay for insurance or buy a Pre.

For clarity's sake, I'm going to focus on this one movie for this response.

First, the "MPEG4" link under Stream doesn't even play with QuickTime. So, we know it's just broken.

Under Play/Download, note that there's not a "dialup" link like I've seen with other items on archive.org. This means that there's probably no version encoded at mobile-friendly bitrates.

To confirm, I open the "MPEG4" link with QuickTime Player on my PC, and note that it's way too large (640x316) to decode in realtime on a Treo, and that it's encoded for broadband (almost 1600 kilobits/sec!) and will never work over mobile.

However, it's really easy to turn this movie into a mobile-friendly stream with Kinoma Producer and other tools. And since it's in the public domain, it's completely legal to to do. I'll post back with an example later today.

An easy workaround is to copy the link and paste it into Kinoma Player's Open URL dialog.

This is an example of an archive.org movie that works great in Kinoma Player as-is.

Just use the Play/Download "64Kb MPEG4" link, and then turn out the lights and click the Full Screen icon if you really want to be freaked out. (Muahahahaha!)

I cannot get it to work period. If I tell it to play it brings up PTunes. I cannot get the link to work in Kinoma, by saving the link to card.

Right, because you're clicking the link in Web/Blazer, and PTunes has somehow (incorrectly) decided that it should be the helper app for that type of link. The URL is never handed to Kinoma Player at all in your case.

If you follow my instructions, it'll work great.

I get "the page download could not be completed please try again later". Kinoma never came up. Kinoma comes up for the stream link, but says something about incompatible.

I cannot get the link, while on the phone, to paste in, because the page will not load.

If I get on a PC, I can "copy shortcut" to get the link, send it to my phone, and then paste it into Kinoma. Kinoma freezes at buffering 0%

That's a Web (Blazer) error. You don't mention the link you clicked on, but that error means that your Treo's web browser tried and failed to load the link you clicked on.

Without knowing the specific link I can only guess what's happening. When you see "buffering", it means that Kinoma Player is literally starving for data.

Two potential explanations are that archive.org was stalling (which it often does), or that there was a problem with your mobile data connection at that time.

I can't promise how long I'll keep this URL up, but try this in Kinoma Player:

    http://wiltgen.net/k/dracula.wmv

This is the first 10 minutes of The Satanic Rights of Dracula, a classic 1974 Hammer horror film in the public domain.

OK, your dracula link worked perfectly.

This link froze. Sorry I thought you knew I was pasting the one you told me to paste. http://www.archive.org/download/nigh..._dead_64kb.mp4

Maybe is a longer movie freezing, because it's larger? Are there settings on Blazer or in Kinoma that might make that less apt to happen? Was 30 seconds not long enough to wait for it to get past 0%?

Is there a way to "save target as" with Blazer? I cannot figure how to do the equivalent of "right click", "save target as", in Blazer. That is why I have to save the movies from a PC and then transfer them to my phone card.

I'd much rather stream than download movies, but downloading on the phone would be OK. I jut really do NOT want to be dependant on a PC!

It would be so nice if some of the best movies were able to be clicked on right from Kinoma Media guide. I've never seem so many of them. I had a very TV and movie deprived childhood, and then had cable for most of my adulthood, so just never even heard of this stuff.

I'm on the move so much lately with just my phone to depend on for TV. It's a perfect time to get caught up on some missing culture, if I could just get at this stuff.

Charles, thank you! I'm sorry to be such a pest!

Oh, and some of the AFTV channels were not working from Kinoma yesterday (not sure about today) but worked fine from the mobile website at AFTV. You might want to check that. I have a sharklink hot key for the channels, so don't care...but others might be dissapointed, when clicking on them, from Kinoma. AFTV did some mucking around after I discovered an error :-0 I think it might be partly my fault the Kinoma links don't work :-0
