    Hi!
I am pretty new to Palm. My first Palm was an unlocked 650 from eBay about 2 months ago. There are a couple questions I have for long time users or anyone who can help.

It crashes a lot. I mean.. ALOT. Probably about twice a day...if I don't talk on it or use any apps. If there is a lot of use it'll probably crash anywhere from every hour to every 15 minutes. About 65% of calls that I receive I don't get and goes straight to my voicemail. And the voicemail won't show up until the phone resets again. On phone calls longer than 10 minutes it'll usually crash. I'd have to take out the battery and put it back in b|c I don't have a hole in my battery cover for the reset button. I have no apps installed, but only demos. Most of them have expired and I have deleted. I demoed "Reset Doctor" and it doesn't seem to help at all. Most of the crashes that it logs list the reason as "Fatal Exception" or "HALRadioAcDc.c,Line:441,Host wake not asserted in time". I have no clue what those mean.

I have no clue what to do. I want to keep this phone, but it doesn't seem worth it at times. I wouldn't want any other phone, for not many phones have this type of versatility. I don't want to dish out the extra cash for a 680 or a 750 because I don't even hear many good things about them. I considered the Samsung Blackjack, but I don't know much about it and how good it is. If someone can tell me something to help my problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, let's say I purchase and download an app to this phone. If I got rid of this phone later and got a new 650 or 680 or whatever would I have to buy the apps again or could I use the ones I bought for my old phone?

    Thanks!

The first thing I would do is do a full reset. I recently had rebooting and locking problems on mine and i did a full reset. Then make sure you have most recent software installed on your system. I think you can get that from palm.com. Download the unlocked rom since yours is unlocked.

Try a program called trace crash and see if it helps. Its a free program that analyzes the crash logs.

Also, if your not using the bluetooth turn it off. My friend was having a lot of issues and turned off his bluetooth and it stopped happening.

    Hopefully something helps.

How many 3rd party applications do you have, and what are they? How much free RAM do you have?

If you keep your hotsync ID the same with the next Treo you buy you can take your software applications with you to the new device. I think there are only one or two rare applications (like TomTom) that are locked to the device. Most if not all are locked to your hotsync ID.

You could try a custom ROM to free up some dbcache. This can help improve stability because you have more room for applications to work in.

Do check if you have the latest version of the ROM installed. Check the Palm website and update if necessary.

And for some time don't install any new apps, just use it with the native apps till you get to know a device. This may seem trivial, but makes a significant difference.

If you still get crashes, then you should think of changing the device. 650s are quiet reliable if they are not loaded with all kinds of shareware and freeware applications.

I remember the "HALRadioAcDc" error message being a serious problem a while ago. I can't remember exactly what it meant, but I vaguely remember the Treos needing to be replaced.

If you purchase an app and later get a replacement, the developers usually let you transfer your registration if you contact them. Just make sure it's a Palm OS device...

Yeah, it's always been my understanding that the "HALRadio..." errors indicate a hardware problem.

    Thanks, everyone.

I'll try some of this stuff out and keep you updated on how it goes. Are there any good apps that can log or track crashes and the reason for crashes. Reset Doctor always tells me that it's a "User Initiated" reset or there's a "Fatal Exception". Wow that helps... I guess most of the time it is user initiated because I end up taking the battery out and putting it back after it freezes.

    I don't want another phone!

Was this a sign-off or advice? If the latter, I agree...all should love an Asian (frustrated or otherwise) Good luck with your Treo!

Try trace crash. It should help. Also make sure you do any Rom updates.

How do I check my ROM? And where do I get the latest updates if needed?

I've read some forums where people have the same problem and have gotten their Treo replaced by Palm. Would I be able to do this without a warranty since I bought it on eBay?

Press your phone button to bring up your phone pad. Press the menu button, click on options and select phone info. Under software you'll see the version you're using. To get a ROM update, go to you palm's website and click on support. It should steer you to current information.

I can't see palm or any manufacturer replacing the device w/o a warranty. If your seller provided a warranty and guarantee, you'll need to use that.

The "HalRadio..." is a known problem. I hope that's not why the seller was getting rid of the device on eBay in the first place.

that's the only page i found that said anything with the Treo's ROM. It also mentions a Treo 650 Updater but no ROM update. It says resets may be experienced AFTER the updater is done, but I haven't updated anything. I'm thinking the guy who sold it to me maybe did or idk.

And when I clicked on "Phone Info" in the phone application, which numbers tell me anything about ROM? It gives me:
    My Phone Number:
    IMEI NUmber:
    HS SN:
    SA Number:
    Firmware:
    Software:
    Hardware:

I would check the ebay listing to make sure it doesn't say that in the description.

Also, Trace Crash is so simple to understand as opposed to Palm Internals IMHO.
It is a great free program.
