My AT&T 650 has reprogrammed itself! thr Phone button now runs the menu and I cannot get it back to running the phone. I did a soft reset -- no luck. Restored my backup -- no change. Your advice on fixing this would be appreciated.

On a side note, how could this happen?

Perform a hard reset and test it before you restore from backup. If all is OK, then it's a software problem. Have you installed something like LudusP?

Your problem has been caused by one of the 3rd party applications you've installed.

    1. Hotsync, to backup your Treo to the desktop
    2. Rename your /Palm/<username>/Backup directory (to, say, Backup.old)
    3. Hard reset
    4. Hotsync

That'll load your PIM data, but none of your 3rd party software. Now, reinstall one or two apps at a time, testing after each install, until the problem comes back; at that point, you should have a pretty good idea of who the culprit is.

The problem is fixed. I did a restore the backup during a hotsyc and that fixed the problem. I'm not sure what caused the problem in the first place, but I did find the program that prolonged it after backups: Reset Doctor. It has somehow saved the wrong programming for the buttons and kept restoring them after I would restore from backup. I finally had to turn off the program functions and delete the program's files from the backup being restored. This restored the button functions effectively.

It may have been a glitch with Reset Doctor all along, but I can't prove it. This problem has happened before I had Reset Doctor, so it's hard to pin the blame there. It is funny. I don't have any 3rd party programs that affect button functioning, except for Pocket Tunes. Another Palm mystery left unsolved.
