I have read at least a dozen threads on ringtones and am still not sure on how exactly you use wav and amr ringtones on my Treo 755.

I am wondering the same thing. Help anyone?

okay you need to be a tad more specific on that question. Pretty much any ringtone software can use wav files I don't know what amr files are. Such software examples are Lightwave, mring, ringo pro just to name a few. All of these from what I remember all work with wav ... why are you using wav files instead of mp3?

I have an .mp3 on my SD card I want to use as a ringer but cant get the phone to recognize it as a usable ringer. This is where I'm baffled.

okay the treo isn't mp3 compatable right out of the box. You will be needing a 3rd party ringer program like the ones I mentioned above.

If you have an mp3 ringtone, use itunes or Quicktime to convert it to an AAC (m4a). Then you can use an uploader like www.funformobile.com to get the tone in the right place on your treo. Cudos to a friend who clued me in on this yesterday.

A much better idea is to use the free software "MiniTones" to pick specific parts (or all, if you're feeling adventurous) of your MP3 and have it turned into a "standard" ringer. It's a really fantastic piece of software, and it's even sort of fun to play around with. Highly recommended.

To clarify, it doesn't make a standard (MIDI) ringer, it does, however, cut/crop your mp3's and make them selectable from the standard ringer interface on the phone.

An even more feature rich mp3 cutter/slicer/modifier is Audacity (free, no ads!)

Audacity can also convert from any format to any other format.

While I am sure Audacity is excellent software, the main perk of "MiniTones" is that it runs on your Treo, allowing you to take an MP3 from your card, crop it, and move it to your device memory for use as a ringer.

If you would prefer to do this on your desktop and then copy the files over, then take a look at senjiro's solution, it looks like an interesting piece of software.

minitones is great for what it can do but doesn't work to well if you have 50 people that you would like to have ringtones for and a lot of 3rd party programs since mini tones takes up a lot of internal memory. I have found it to be much more memory efficient to use a card based mp3 ringtone player like lightwav and in lightwav you don't even have to crop the song because you can set where you want the ringtone to start right in the phones software. I now use my phone as my mp3 player and so I don't have to waist my time cutting and timeing songs with lightwav all I have to do is select the whole song and then just put where I want it to start. Plus with lightwav I can have full screen jpg caller Id.

The reason I asked about AMR ringtones is because I found a thread here on TC that a few people have various sounds from Star Trek that are in AMR format. I wanted to at least install them and see if I liked them.

Both WAVs and AMR files can be installed to RAM. Email them to your Treo, and then open each one with "Sounds".

Once you've downloaded it into Sounds, if shows as "?????", you've got to rename it.
