I feel like a complete idot asking this question since I have been a long time Palm user.
Just got a 680 and am following the advice posted here about doing fresh installs.
The problem I'm having is that my 680 has a user id of 1q90. How do I change it? When I go to sync it's looking for this user.
I've searched and can't find the answer to this?

You know if it's this much hassle to upgrade each time I'm going to seriously consider the BlackBerry next time.

Buy it used? Pretty sure the HSID is given to the palm by the Hotsync software.. If it's hard reset, it was take the id from the PC.

    Always been this way.

    Yup bought used.
Done some more research. I'm not doing the Hard Reset correctly or it won't hard reset.
I've tried it a few times but I don't get the message asking if to erase all data.
Will try again when I get home.
    Thanks.

Try doing a factory reset, pursuant to the instructions found at this link: http://kb.palm.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBC...ase=obj(15574).

Interesting your article from Palm talk about holding down the powe button.
I've been following this article also from Palm that talks about holding down the up arrow which is not working for me.

Hope the method in your link is more successful.
    Will let you know.
    Thanks.

I think you may have misunderstood, because you hold the up button for a warm reset, which doesn't (and isn't supposed to) erase your data. It just helps, sometimes, to get you out of a reset loop. The hard reset instructions at the link you posted say to press and hold the power button.
