A little bit more info below:

"NormSoft has released an update to their popular Pocket Tunes mp3 program. The newest version of the app, v4.0.3, is dated July 6th 2007 and according to NormSoft's changelog, appears to have only one significant change from the previous version. It rectifies an issue where users of newer Treos with the app in ROM (680, 700p, 755p) can update to the latest version of the basic version of the player 4.0.3 after the conclusion of their trial period of the Deluxe version. Previously, users had to delete the newer RAM-resident version to revert back to the bundled ROM version."

I'm curious how average users can manage to update something thats in ROM! Also wondering if this means this version would be more ROM friendly for a 650 ROM upgrade -- the curent 4.0 deluxe version definitely doesnt work in ROM, well at least not in mine.

    cheers

It says nothing about updating anything in the ROM, just that the RAM version doesn't need to be uninstalled after the trial period.

If I'm reading this correctly, it means that if you got the app in ROM, you are allowed to use the newest version for free since you already own the app in your ROM. I just got a 700p and I'm not sure if I plan to install PT in RAM as well. I own PT Deluxe, but I rarely use it. I haven't adjusted to the concept of not having to manage my RAM so carefully and being able to "waste" space on an app that's already in ROM.

I suspect this means the same MAJOR VERSION...

So for isntance the 680 has 3.x installed, I bet you can't install 4.x and it'll work for free. Once the trial is up, it'll revert back to the ROM version.

Right. That seems fair. I think it's most important that ROM users aren't deprived of minor upgrades and (more importantly) bug fixes that would be available to someone who purchased 4.0 at retail.

If you have 3.0.9 in ROM, you can actually install 4.0.3 (in RAM) and have its bundle version for free, or you can buy the pro.

That all misses the real point. Here's a post to the PocketTunes Yahoo Group by the owner of Normsoft:

    "Hello all,

We've recently posted a minor update to our website: Pocket Tunes 4.0.3.

The primary goal of this update is to enable Windows Vista and Windows
Media Player 11 compatibility for customers using the free version of
Pocket Tunes included on many phones
    .

Customers with the free version will be able to update to version
4.0.3 for free. They will get a 15-day trial of Deluxe (which they can
choose to end at any time), after which it will revert to the Bundle
mode features. When it reverts, it will retain the ability to sync
    with WMP 11.

    Download from www.pocket-tunes.com

    Enjoy!

Aha, that's cool for those unlucky enough to use Windows and WMP11.

Yup. Too bad AAC support isn't included in the basic version. I have to have 2 copies of select songs to sync with my Treo, one as an AAC (like the rest of my library) and the other an mp3.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded it today and I'll try it out later.

Has anybody actually tried this? The PocketTunes website says that 4.03 is NOT a free update from 3.0.9 for Treo 680s (etc):

Try doing it from your phone. Well, I have a 700p, but it said it was a free update. When you tap yes and go to the regular page, it says you have to pay for it.

I can see Normsoft doing this, since Microsoft updated their stuff, they may not think it's right for Palm users to have to pay just to have their functionality back. Maybe they're also assuming users may pay the small fee to go to the Deluxe version (I'm thinking of doing that) rather than sticking with the ROM version (like I've been doing). I'd like the Deluxe, but the difference is too much to justify. Bump me to 4.0, then I'll consider it.

Get the Deluxe. You never stream internet radio or use Orb to get your own music at home to your Treo? Try it out!

I decided to download the new version. I only own PT up to v. 3 so I would have to pay again if I want all the Deluxe features. I forgot the reason I never use it: so much of my music is either AAC or AAC purchased from the Apple Store, and so many of the songs I want to put on my Treo can't be played. Now that PT supports AAC this may help a little, but the vast majority are DRM, and I don't have the energy to convert all of them to a non-DRM format.

I've never been a fan of using my PDA as an MP3 player anyway -- I end up getting tangled in the cords. I prefer to have my iPod staying tucked in one pocket with the cord going to my ears, and the PDA in another pocket where I can easily take it out to jot a note, play a game, or make a call, without dragging a wire around.

Anyone notice that there are far fewer internet radio stations now vs. before the update or is it just me?

Likely because the RIAA is suing all of them that they can.
