I posted a similar message under us-gsm. But better to get details here from the T680 crowd.

Bottom line...looking to get a T680. Unlocked version from Palm direct is cheaper than an AT&T branded phone (assuming no rebates or upgrade stuff) My question is why? Whe the hell am I getting but the cute AT&T logo on resets?

2 things I can think of...
    - I believe latest 680 update only works on ATT version
    - I believe you can only get Arctic, Copper, and Red through ATT

That's not exactly true; see 680 Custom Rom.

I purchased my unlocked 680 directly from Palm and I haven't experienced the problems discussed by those that have the locked phones. I think AT&T adds some proprietary items during their branding process and that is what caused the problems. Hence, the ROM update for AT&T phones only ... the Palm unlocked versions did not require the extensive update, just the camera patch.

With the patch for the AT&T phones in place, it is probably as stable as the Palm unlocked versions now, barring poor choices of third-party software. I hope you enjoy your phone, whichever one you choose. I am very happy with mine.

Persumably as a discounted upgrade with a new 2 year contract.

Yes, 2 year contract (don't care), and it was a business discount Not available any longer, I suspect.

Having both unlocked and Branded 680s, I don't see any different issues between them. The purpose of the ROM update is to re-brand the 680. You can apply these patches (camera, DTS new rule, securities avail. on palm.com) separately on both unlocked and Branded 680s. However, everytime you do a hard reset then, you have to run the patches. With the new ROM update, it will stay doesn't matter what. That's also one of many reasons why unlocked 680 owners flash the custom ROM posted here.

One benefit for those who own Cingular branded 680s: the carrier will be easier bend over to solve problems rather than manufacturer. Furthermore, buy a 680 at&t branded now, you have a car charger in the box!
