This is likely related to network issues on ATT and not Google Maps. See if you can browser the web, I bet you cant.

you are absolutely correct. I contacted ATT/Cingular and they confirmed the network was down. Can't wait to check out the new version of GoogleMaps.

Holy crap, the network is down? As in ATT users can't get any data? That would suck. I guess they didn't prepare for the iPhone as well as they thought, huh?

I did have that problem initially with the new version on my 650. It is now fixed, but I am not sure why. Tried various things including deleting before reinstalling and fiddling with network settings. Sorry I can't be more definite.

Every once in a while I check for a new version of Google Maps for Palm. I just downloaded it.... it now offers the ROM functionality for the Treo 755p- meaning you have contact lookup! You look up contacts directly from the Google Maps PRC! How cool is that! The newest version is 1.2.0.8. Very cool! Enjoy everyone.

Check out Google Maps for Mobile here.
    Thanks,

I can't wait until they add GPS functionality to this app. Do they have that on the WM version? Google maps is just head and shoulders above the other mapping solutions for Palm, I haven't tried TomTom yet though. But a free GM would be much nicer than a $150 TomTom.

TomTom is much better for navigation than Google Maps. In fact, they are really different categories. TomTom being navigation, Google Maps is more like Mapping.

TomTom guides you, shows you the path, route, various ways to show the route, alternative routes, waypoints, voice guidance, etc...

Yeah, but it requires considerable $$ and lots of memory. I'm kind of on the fence with that. A lot of the time I don't need more than Google Maps offers, it's route plotting works fine for me, and often I'm the navigator anyhow. Being able to get Google Maps to refresh my position on the map every 30 seconds or something would be great actually.

You might try EarthComber too.. It does use GPS, but its directions are text-only. I've been telling 'em for two years now that they need visual routing on the display.

It has a lot of nice point of interests, you can import your own, or pick any from the EarthComber community, etc.

The price is very right too. Free.

While this is not quite the same as having GPS functionality, the following application ("Where Am I") does launch GoogleMaps with current location from GPS co-ordinates:

Where Am I, rocks! Bad thing is, everytime it goes to Google Maps, it goes to the O.G. version on the 755, not this NEW version of Google Maps.

Really? If so, then GM is unique in this respect.

I'm sure glad GM isn't in ROM on my 680 then

One thing, does anyone know how to disable the splash screen that you have to click off before a map loads? It's not a huge deal but it would be nice not to see it ever again.

Bill Gamble, yeah it sucks cause the new version looks good, but it still works the same with the ROM version....
